Macabre!  Well, we had to get a new dishwasher so went back.  Found a nice unit
for 299$ (old one was over 10 years old and not a fancy one even when new).  We
asked and the dryer was history.  The monster freezer (their words, not mine!)
is now being fixed and donated to a local church that runs a sort of food-bank.
'Donate' means at cost of parts.  They found a label and as we's gotten it used
we hadnt realized it was as old as it was.  Top of the line stuff in 1954.  All
it needed was a compressor replaced and it was easy to get at due to design.

Combination but we dont get whole sides of lamb or anything like that.  Its 
still a family of 3 here.  We do get larger cuts, trim them down to what we 
need and freeze it in parts.  We also can get 'value family packs' (10 lbs or
more of whatever) and have room to store it.

We dont normally get much pre-frozen food, but some things are sold that way
such as little snacky frozen things but they go on 'loss-leader' sales so we
get them then and stock lots.  Kinda like your meatpies, we get things a bit
like that.  Our fav Chicken Burritos for example are about 33-40cents each but
go on 'loss-leader sales' for 10 to a dollar now and again. With an extra
freezer, you can get 30 at that price.       

Chicken goes on loss-leader sale for 39-49cents and we can get (and store) 6
months worth vice paying the more normal .89-1.19lb price.  We can also have 
lots of room to store a bird carcass and when enough are gathered, make our
own stock so we don't have to buy it at .75cents a can (and get all their extra
sodium they add to the cans).

It works, but even just feeding yourself, you'd save money I bet with a *small*
freezer unit.  Lots of things you probably arent thinking of, freeze well.
