Sort of. I believe that one-offs were allowed to have a leg
up in the licensing process; chains always had a harder time
of it (some cashier at TJs told Carol and me about some more
arcane provision that one owner could buy licenses for only
3 locations). Also, as you know, stores within a certain
distance (I dunno, 2 or 5 miles maybe) of New Hampshire were
allowed to sell all the booze they liked even on Sunday.

Not bloody likely, as long as there is an electorate capable
of putting Mitt Romney in office. And even the more progressive
governors, Frank Sargent, Bill Weld, and Mike Dukakis, were
pretty puritanical in personal issues.

It looked to me as though Enfield itself were pretty surplus
in general.

Put it this way, the cartridge had so little muzzle velocity that
some people were said to be able to see the projectile in flight.
Rumor was that it took a whole magazineful to knock down a rabid
North Korean. A head shot to man or beast would probably fatally
damage, but the shortness of the barrel combined with the small fps
made a head shot less than likely at any kind of real distance.

I'm talking about the '50s. They may have been coasting on their
reputation as the rifle that won the west, but they still had it.

Crane Crest rice salad
cat: rice, salad
servings: 4 to 6

1 c rice
6 Tb Crane Crest salad dressing
1 red pepper, julienne
1/2 red onion, chopped
1/2 lb feta, crumbled
1/4 c mint, chopped
2 Tb lemon juice
s, p

Cook rice in the usual way. Transfer to a bowl
and toss with dressing while still warm. Let cool.
Mix in vegetables and cheese. Correct seasoning
with lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

Crane Crest is said to be the house salad dressing
of the Bush family and of the Gore family.
