Ärende: Truckin'
================
On 11-18-06 Sean Dennis Scribbled to Dave Drum about Truckin'

SD> DD> Hold on to it. I suppose it probably has rust around the rear
SD> DD> wheel wells - where they all rust. I'd still be driving mine if
SD> DD> that Mac Tools truck hadn't pulled out in front of me and
SD> DD> ripped the lips off my little car.

SD>There is a tiny-I mean enough to fix in an hour's worth of body prep
SD>and minor Bondo-on one little section in the back. Amazingly enough,
SD>other than that, it's rust free. Honda finally fixed that rusting
SD>quirk in the 2000 models, I do believe, due to a different body
SD>design. I'm about to put $1000 into it getting two new halfshafts, a
SD>new upper stabilizer bar (has the upper ball joints as part of it and
SD>they are shot), clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing replaced.
SD>I've done a lot of shopping around here and the guy I'm taking it to
SD>told me that he'd give me a discount because I was having all of that
SD>work done at once and since everything would be open and out, it
SD>would make it easier for him to replace everything.

Oddly the upper sway bar is more expensive to buy and tougher to replace
than the half-shafts (I can get them for U$39.99/ea - exchange) clutch
kit goes for around U$85. I think the price I saw for the sway bar,
bushings and links (ball joints) was in the neighbourhood of U$140 -
but, I could be wrong on that. Are you going to do the hubs/bearings on
the front wheels whilst you have the job open? Probably add a hundred
bucks to your parts outlay but should not increase your labour costs.

SD>The car runs wonderfully - a slight hesitation on acceleration, but
SD>it needs a new rotor button and distributor cap...might change both
SD>fuel filters too (it's a 2-bbl carb'd engine). Other than that, it's
SD>a good little car.

Check the carbonater. Plugs, cap, wires and rotor are easy and
(relatively) inexpensive. But, your problem sounds like a worn
accelerator pump or power valve in the carburetter. Very few people
these days know how to deal with carburetters. In my metro area (pop
about 225K) we have exactly one shop which does carbs. And he is a one
man band.

SD>On the subject of food, in our household, Cornish hens have replaced
SD>turkey. Smaller, easier to cook and more tasty, IMNSHO. Besides, we
SD>each have our own, so no fighting about who gets white and dark meat
SD>(I like both). I'm looking forward to cooking as Maura has picked a
SD>couple of recipes for me and is going to make the pumpkin pie
SD>herself.

I have found that the Cornish hens we get around here are mostly just
battery raised pullets stuffed into a Tyson plastic bag and frozen. I'd
just as soon buy boneless thigh meat on sale (which I did this week for
U$1.09/lb) which makes them less expensive that just thighs on regular
sale (U$1.19/lb) even if I do give up the thigh bones to make stock
from. Life is a series of trade-offs.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Spicy Pumpkin Fries
 Categories: Squash
      Yield: 4 servings

    1/2 c Flour
      2 tb Seasoned pepper; salt-free
      2 lb Fresh pumpkin
4 c Or more peanut oil for
           -deep-frying
           Salt
    1/2 c (2 oz.) grated Parmigiano
           -Reggiano cheese

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Cover cookie sheet with paper
  towels.

In large plastic resealable bag, combine flour and seasoned
  pepper.

Peel and cut pumpkin in thin sticks, such as for thin
french fries. Seal pumpkin sticks in seasoning bag. Toss
  to coat pumpkin.

Heat oil in heavy, deep saucepan or deep-fat fryer until
  frying thermometer reaches 375 degrees.

Fry pumpkin sticks in batches 4 to 5 minutes per batch
until golden. Bring oil to 375 degrees before starting
  each batch.

Using slotted spoon, remove cooked fries. Drain on paper
  towels.

Sprinkle generously with salt and cheese. Keep warm in
oven until all fries are made.

  Serve very hot.

  Makes 4 servings.

Note: Butternut squash can replace pumpkin.

Oven-frying: Toss pumpkin sticks with 2 tablespoon
seasoned pepper, 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
and 2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil. Bake in
single layer on well-greased baking pan. Bake in
preheated 425-degree oven, flipping several times,
30 to 40 minutes until golden; check early, because
size of sticks determines length of baking.
