Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> One gets used to certain substitutions for better nutrition, and
NB> they NB>> seem to work their way into other recipes.. (G) "But I
 NB> CAN'T use... I NB>> haven't got any in the house...!"

RH> I know; if you've got any cook books that have brand name products
RH> used in them...................... So what if the tomato sauce isn't
RH> C or H or DM as long as it's tomato sauce?

NB> I was thinking more of white sugar, instant rice, etc. Brand name
NB> substitutions go without saying around here... :) Of course, which
NB> ones of those are in the house may depend on what's in them, too.

I know, I don't use white sugar, flour or rice so I make quite a few
substitutions. And, there are some people who can't cook unless every
ingredient is exactly what's specified in the recipe. Sad, isn't it?

RH> She (Steve's mom) bottle fed all 5 of her kids; my nursing Rachel was
RH> a first in their family.

NB> That was my guess. Along with her sister not nursing either. If it's
NB> not familiar, and there's not much support, any little thing can sour
 NB> the deal quickly.

Or curdle the milk. (G)

RH> My MIL came down to help the first week but
RH> couldn't really help with nursing problems. She did fix a good sized
RH> portion of broccoli for me one night (eat your vegetables); Rachel had
RH> a good case of gas a few hours later. Her intentions were good but the
RH> lack of knowledge was bad for all of us.

NB> She meant well. :) Like my sister, who came to help us when Rob was
NB> born, and, who when cooking frozen wonton soup cooked it until the
 NB> wontons fell apart...

Yes, you look back and laugh over those times.

NB> nursing to go well, NB>> one has to either have the right mindset
NB> about it, or have lots of NB>> good support... or both... :)

RH> I think it's a lot of both. Rachel is nursing Sarah, and did Robert
RH> but I know she started suppliments (relatively) early with Robert. She
RH> wants to go longer with straight nursing Sarah however.

NB> Agreed, generally both... Very strongly on either, though, can make
NB> enough of a difference to make it go... :) One's experiences with
NB> others nursing probably counts some in each category, as does one's
 NB> own experience... :)

Rachel hasn't talked much about what her friends have done nor did she
get into LLLI. But, she did read enough about it, plus, knowing that I
did it (and probably a lot of other reasons) made it fairly successful.

RH> Keeps the formula/bottle industries in business. (G) But, it's
RH> something that you can't pressure a woman into, successfully anyway.

NB> Got a point there... two points, actually... :) Very true, that
NB> pressuring doesn't work... if nothing else, the stress makes the
NB> process even less likely to be successful, which really defeats the
 NB> purpose. :)

A vicous cycle of defeat.

NB> else... NB>> but then, Mommy had nursed all of us, and we just took
NB> it for granted NB>> that that was the normal way to do things... and
 NB> the next generation

RH> Same here. My mom claims she nursed all of us for 6 moths but my baby
RH> book says that I was on all cows milk by Election Day. My birthday is
RH> in the latter part of July; her math doesn't add up there.

NB> She was just learning on you... you were the first, right? :) After
NB> you, she made sure to nurse longer... :)

I'm the 2nd of 5, first girl. My older brother is 22 months older,
sister right below me is 18 months younger.

NB> Mommy claims to have usually nursed each for a year or more... it's
NB> possible, as I really wasn't paying that much attention... the kid was
NB> born, nursed, eventually was eating at the table with us, and the next
NB> kid was born, etc... I did notice that every time we moved, she was
NB> either pregnant or nursing, so Daddy did the bulk of the packing and
 NB> moving... :)

Quite a chore, especially as the family increased.

 NB> NB>> doing the same. :) Nowadays, I've noticed that there's a lot
NB> more NB>> support from the get-go, from the hospital when the baby is
NB> born, and NB>> usually from the doctors...

RH> Yes, Rachel was visited by a lactation specialist when Sarah was only
RH> about 3 hours old. She also called Rachel a week later, don't know
RH> about other times. Sarah's doctor and Rachel's ob-gyn are both very
 RH> supportive as well.

 NB> They've learned a bit over the years... :)

Yes, and I'm glad they have.

NB> NB>> I think that similar happened with us... Richard was as great an
 NB> NB>> advocate of it as I. ;)

RH> It's a big help when your husband is fully into it as well. Steve had
RH> thought I'd bottle feed as that was all he basically knew about. When
RH> I told him I'd be doing otherwise, he started reading about it. The
RH> more he read, the more he got into the positives of the idea. When I
RH> was pregnant with Deborah, I'd kid him every so often by saying "I
RH> think I'll try bottle feeding this one........" and got a strong "don't
RH> even think about it" answer back.

NB> If I remember correctly, Richard's mom had bottle-fed her oldest
NB> (possibly started nursing and had problems), but then nursed him, the
NB> younger of two, successfully.. So, while he wouldn't have had any
 NB> direct experience, he also wasn't pre-disposed against. I don't even
NB> remember if we discussed it beforehand... other than as part of
NB> general prep for having the baby... I'm sure I was pretty
 NB> matter-of-fact about
NB> planning to do what was totally natural to me... nurse, just like I'd
NB> seen modelled... :) NO need for bottles, except maybe water... and
NB> to hold expressed milk... ;)

I was told that a well nourished baby wouldn't even need water--as
judged by the number of wet diapers in a day.

NB> RH>> Cute. We were surrogate grandparents to the baby that lived
NB> next to RH>> us in HI. I was there when he was born.
NB> NB>> I was there for Derek's birth too... part of the team... :)

RH> It was funny with Amy; her coloring is similar to mine and she's
RH> Rachel's age so everyone thought I was the real grandmother.
