Ärende: TV dinners
==================
Hi Hap,

-> boiled egg off the salad and they did. I had thought that they had a
-> lot of salads all "plated" (bowled?) up, ready for the server to grab
-> with an appropriate cup of dressing. Could be they do do that in busier
-> times but the server was out within a few minutes with salad & no egg.
-> They might have a number of bowls of ingredients in the kitchen so they
-> can make custom salads quickly.

hn> Most places have what amounts to a salad
hn> bar back there where all the ingredients
hn> are just combined to make whatever
hn> particular salad is ordered. If they have

Sounds logical if you've got the kitchen room for it. I've not seen a
lot of restaurant kitchens. In a lot of the "open" ones, there's still a
kitchen behind the "open" kitchen where a lot of the prep stuff is done.
Sort of like the Food Network kitchens. (G)

hn> a hard time remembering to put the dressing
hn> on the side (and I've never been to a place
hn> that has) I'd just order the salad with no
hn> dressing and eat it that way...or order some
hn> dressing *after* the salad was at the table.

One way to go about it & get what you want. I have to remember to ask
for the dressing on the side; it's not that ingrained in my brain yet.
Actually, fast food places always have the dressing on the side. (G)

-> We're going to find a new home for the treadmill before we move; we'll
-> probably be in a smaller place.

hn> Craig's list, or the annual Church White elephant sale?

Or Play It Again Sports but I've got to find the instruction book.

-> hn> tv at the same time! (we only have one tv)

-> We have one tv down stairs and one up stairs (in the computer room, had
-> been in the bed room) but Steve is talking about cutting back to one.

hn> We have one in the living room and
 hn> that's it. It's plenty for us, and I've
hn> never wanted a TV in the bedroom.

At times, when I've been laid up and not felt like reading or whatever,
it was nice to put on some brainless shows. But, for the most part, we
don't watch that much tv to begin with.

-> hn> We had one Christmas where we had
-> hn> forgotten to pay one bill, and when it
-> hn> came due we had to come up with the
->  hn> cash...and it left us with $0.50 each
->  hn> to spend for Christmas...Of course

-> We haven't had them quite that tight but pretty close. Steve was out of
-> work one year, had been laid off just after Thanksgiving. I've done
-> a lot of home made presents over the years, simply because the money
-> wasn't there to buy anything.

hn> This was back in the early '70's when I was
hn> in college. Money was perpetually tight in
hn> those days, but we managed.
hn> We loved making presents instead of buying
hn> them, much more personal and the recipients
hn> knew we were thinking of them when we made
 hn> them!

I know; that's why I enjoy making them. I did sweat shirt jackets for
my mom and MIL one year, with painted sweat shirts for my dad and FIL.
My MIL was stopped by several ladies over the next few months when she
was wearing the jacket so they could see how I made it. We're trying
not to do food gifts for our parents now as both moms are diabetic.

-> hn> When we were younger we had a great Sourdough
-> hn> recipe and did lots of bread baking...but life just
-> hn> got busier and busier and it fell by the wayside.
-> hn> Now we eat so little bread that it would not
-> hn> make sense to have one!

-> My bread making by hand went down the tubes after I broke my wrists.
-> That's when we got the first bread machine; I still had to make school
-> lunches for the girls plus lunch for me & Steve. We still eat probably
-> more bread than you do but have cut back on the total amount over the
-> years. A loaf lasts longer now that it's just 2 of us here. (G)

hn> We probably go through less than 4 loaves a year
 hn> these days.

I think we average a loaf every couple of weeks--give or take a day or
so on either side. Crusts generally go into a bag kept in the freezer.
When that's full (as it is now), I'll thaw them, dice them and oven dry
them out. The next stage is running them thru the blender for my own
bread crumbs; haven't bought any crumbs in years.

Catch you later,
Ruth
