 > One carriage was the luxurious "Prince of Wales" car, built in 1920,

CS> WOW! I'd love to see that! I'm not the railway afficianado you are,
CS> but I like riding trains ever since my Mom and i scampered on one from
CS> Clemson SC to NY city.

The Great Southern Railway has 3 of these classic coaches, built in the
'20s and '30s for royalty and top railway executives, sumptiously
appointed, and recently upgraded with modern air conditioning and
plumbing. They are equipped with single and double bedrooms, lounges,
dining rooms and bathrooms, and come with attendants. When hired by
groups, the individual costs are less than twice first class sleepers.

CS> Railways are popular travel options there for distance travel. I even
CS> found some pretty good options when just browsing arounf the USA train
CS> sets, for distance travel with sleeper cars, some of which have their
CS> own rooms complete with mini-showers now.

The second class sleeper cars have shared toilets and showers, but
first class have en suite roomettes with toilet/shower/wash basins.
These are very compact, but cunningly constructed so that each
component folds away when not being used.

 > Dinner on that first day began with an entree of sugar-cured salmon,
 > avocado, dried cherry tomato, samphire vinegar with grape-seed oil
 > dressing, followed by the main of sesame-crusted kingfish, fried bean
 > curd, laksa sauce, ginger-roasted sweet potato and Asian greens. For

CS> I am told our train food is pretty good too though I do not know if it
CS> is that level. The sleeper cars come with meals included and served in
CS> your room I think, or on the dining car.

On our long distance trains there are separate dining cars for the
first and second class passengers. First class meals are included in
the fare, while the sit-up and sleeper second class buy theirs from the
buffet service and take it to eat in their diner. Usually it is good
basic food, such as lasagne, braised lamb shanks, Moroccan chicken or
curry and rice. Beer and wine are sold at somewhat inflated train
prices, and byo is not allowed.

CS> As you know, I used the train system in Japan fairly often, from
CS> simple 'seaside liner' to fancier bullet types but never saw a dining
CS> car or a sleeper there (not because they do not have them, but because
CS> I was on shorter lines). I just love the idea and adventure of them.

That is one of the great pleasures of long distance train travel,
taking 2 days and nights to cover a distance which takes an interstate
jet only 4 hours or so. Perhaps like on a cruise ship, you are all
together long enough to get to know each other, chatting in the lounge
car or across the dining tables. Waking to a sunrise over a new,
shifting landscape, looking out for wildlife, is exciting.
