Well, no. Not really. But, it does little good to ask permission of random
strangers ... or even neighbours of the owner. 

Actually, I found out that Mr. Farmer was giving away product that he'd already
been paid for (under contract) by Nestle' (Libby's). However, I think that
Libby's had already written off the fields in that area as "unharvestable" due
to soft ground that would not support their equipment.

Butternut squash makes a pie that tastes much like a pumpkin pie.

The wrongly called "global warming" (really climate changes in either
direction) has affected weather patterns to the detriment of local habits WRT
what is planted. Illinois farmers (besides those pumpkin producers contracted
to Nestle'/Libby) still have major portions of their ca$h grain crops standing
in the fields whilst they wait for the ground to dry enough to support the
weight of their harvesters and transport equipment. Some fields are (literally)
underwater.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Saffron Sweet Potato & Red Pepper Soup
 Categories: Soups, Vegetables, Herbs
      Yield: 8 servings
 
      2 sm Red bell peppers; quartered,
           - stemmed, seeded
      2 tb Extra virgin olive oil; more
           - for drizzling
      1 md Onion; chopped
      5    Thyme sprigs
      1    Bay leaf
           Salt
      2 c  Leftover sweet potatoes;
           - mashed (from 1 1/2# raw
           - sweet potatoes)
      4 c  Chicken stock
        pn Saffron threads
           Fresh ground white pepper

  1. Heat broiler to high. Line a baking sheet with foil.
  Arrange red peppers on sheet skin side up and broil about
  4" from heat until skin is very charred, 10 to 15 mins.
  Remove from oven and wrap peppers in foil to steam skin
  loose, 10 to 15 minutes. Peel off skin and coarsely chop
  flesh.

  2. In a 4-qt saucepan, heat olive oil. Add onion, 3 thyme
  sprigs, bay leaf and salt. Cover and cook over low heat,
  stirring occasionally, until soft, about 10 minutes. Add
  sweet potatoes, bell peppers, stock, 2 cups water & saffron
  and bring to a boil. Uncover, reduce heat to medium-low and
  simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes.

  3. Discard thyme sprigs and bay leaf. Using an immersion
  blender, purée soup. Taste and add salt if needed, and
  white pepper. Ladle soup into bowls and garnish with leaves
  from remaining thyme sprigs and a drizzle of olive oil.

  Yield: 8 servings.
