Ärende: Popcorn
===============
Hi Dave,

RH> We got one of those while in Savannah but got rid of it here & went
RH> back to the air popper. Storage constraints were a part of that
RH> decision; the crank handle on that took up room that could have been

DD> From that description I get the idea that we are talking about two
DD> VERY different popcorn poppers. The one I am talking about may be seen

From the kettle corn recipe that was sent, I got that impression too.
But before I saw that, it sounded like we were talking about the same
popper. Not having a picture with our discussions sent me on the wrong
track. I'm back on the right one now.

DD> The one I THINK (always dangerous, I know) you are referencing is
 DD> something like this -
 DD> http://www.kitchenemporium.com/cgi-bin/kitchen/prod/21np581.html -
DD> although I know that there are also electric versions of it they are
DD> all very similar in nomenclature.

Without looking it up, I'd say you were right. The one we had looked
like a tin bucket with a top on and a crank mechanism coming off that.
We got it at one of the outlet stores near Hilton Head, SC.

DD> added. Even if using the alleged "butter baster" above the discharge

RH> Never had one of those. The first hot air popper had a little dish
RH> that you could put some butter in to melt from the heat of the corn
RH> popping. It worked sort of OK; we really didn't use it that much.

DD> On mine it was a smallish reservoir/depression above the popcorn
DD> discharge chute with three or four (my memory of it is not clear)
DD> holes in the bottom with would allow the melting fat to drip on the
DD> popcorn as it went down the chute into the bowl. As it happened that
DD> idea was good in theory. In practice, much of the butter hit the
DD> bottom of the discharge chute. The popcorn sliding down the chute
DD> would pick up some of it. The rest dripped off of the lip of the chute
DD> into the receiving vessel ... drenching the popcorn directly below
DD> that lip with gobs of butter until it was saturated and then allowing
DD> the balance to slide down the side into the bottom of the bowl. Didn't
DD> even work "sort of OK" so I got rid of the thing to a new home and got
 DD> the Stir-Crazy.

We always found it better to melt the butter separately and drizzle it
over the bowl of popped corn.

DD> Stir Crazy I don't need any further butter on the corn.

RH> That's one thing we've not figured out how to make with a hot air
RH> popper. If there were some way we could do it, I'd probably make it
RH> more than I should & then look like a popcorn ball. (G)

DD> Uh, the first URL I gave above has a kettle corn maker sitting next to
DD> the regular Stir-Crazy. Not to present a temptation or anything ....

Another uni-tasker in this small a house is not needed. I've managed to
find storage for most every thing we've bought since moving in but the
place will explode (like popcorn) if I try to squeeze too much more in.
We've talked about replacing our roughly 30 year old waffle iron (cord
is beginning to show signs of needing replacing) with a George Foreman
but don't have the space without a serious re-arraingement of what we
have. Now if we could find an old fashioned small appliance repair
person........................

I tried making something like this for Steve's birthday the first year
we were married. The recipe was defective so it didn't turn out. I
think that's when we decided to go with something pumpkin from then on.
He's had pumpkin cake, pie and roll various years. The last 15 or so
we've stuck with the pumpkin roll. Oh, one year it was a pumpkin cheese
cake and the year he was in Korea, nothing.

Catch you later,
Ruth

... It works! Now, if only I could remember what I did.
