I know, it's one of those idiot-syncracies of the English language.  My
mom used to can a lot of things too, still does some but not quite as
much since they got a freezer.  Our last summer in North Carolina before
Steve went into the Army, I canned some peaches that were super sweet.
I didn't use any sugar in the water, just some ascorbic acid, they were
that sweet.

All of the instructions I've read about home canning instruct the canner
to remove the screw band after (I think) 24 hours.  That would hold the
lid in place if the jar were tumbled about but without one, there's a
higher probablility the jar would come unsealed.  Some jars have a wire
bail and rubber gasket ring but those aren't as common as those ones
that use the screw band and lid.

Yes, and trying to interpret that---it seems each manufacturer has a
