=====================
Hi Hap,

-> HN> You'd have probably won if you'd been there!

-> Could be; I could have done a last minute tweak on the spicing. Still,
-> 2nd isn't bad and I know my chili is well liked among the church family.
-> I made a big pot of it in October for a Wed. night supper on a raw,
-> blustery day & got rave reviews then

 HN> I'm not surprised!
 HN> EVERYONE loves Chili!!

Turns out, the winner just had a hotter version of mine; I'd given him
the idea of corn in it from the batch I made last fall. From what I
understand, 3 guys were the judges--should have had a female too, to
convince them that hot isn't everything. (G) But, whatever, it's the
fun of the competition that's the important thing.

-> HN> (grin) Hope you feel better now though!

-> Working on it, have a couple of perscriptions to go thru. One is a 6
-> day steriod burst, the other is 2 weeks of a Cipro-related antibiotic.
-> Steve doesn't mind eating out of the freezer & pantry but by next week
-> at this time I should be back to cooking instead of nuking. (G)

HN> Cipro is pretty hefty stuff. hope you
 HN> don't get side effects.
HN> And hope it works as well!

So far, so good. The nasty stuff is being knocked out and I've not had
any side effects (other than a bit of light headedness the first day or
so) from the meds. I've tried to stay in; went out for class on
Thursday but decided to skip another, optional event that afternoon.
The usual time, rest, liquids have been a big help. I'm glad the
freezer was somewhat stocked so I've not had to cook.

-> HN> Ended up making a lentil sausage
->  HN> dish, yummy!

-> Sounds like it would have been really good for this kind of weather.
-> Did you use a recipe "straight" or just as a suggestion? (G)

HN> Basically looked in the pantry for
HN> whatever jumped up and said
HN> "COOK ME!!" had some mild
HN> Italian sausage from a sale
HN> so that and the lentils won
 HN> date with the stove!

Sounds good tho I suspect you would have preferred a hotter sausage. (G)
Sometimes tho, the mild brings out other flavors more, that the hot
covers up with its heat. What other spicing did you use?

 HN> Baloney for me!

I would have gladly traded sandwiches.

-> HN> YIPES! Is there someone nearby who
-> HN> can do things for your mom, like
-> HN> take her to appts and grocery
-> HN> shopping and such? Hope any news
-> HN> you get is good news!!

-> Dad had an artificial hip put in yesterday, will be in that hosptial a
-> few days, then transferred to the hospital/rehab in the town where they
-> live. My younger brother lives across the street (but works a good bit
-> away). He's working from home today & tomorrow because of the storm.
-> Steve and I have been e-mailing him (and my other siblings) trying to
-> get a feel for what can be done, both short term and longer term
-> modifications to the house to handle this and future situations. We
-> have some ideas that make sense to us; it's getting my siblings feed
-> back that we need. Sigh!

 HN> The folks I know who've had
HN> artificial hips put in have
 HN> all done well.

Talked to my parents yesterday; dad's in therapy 4 times a day. The
therapist said that he would be clombing stairs before discharge--but on
a limited basis.  He won't be able to work in the garden as he had;
maybe we need to think about some raised bed gardening for him to try.
All sorts of considerations to be made, both for basic quality of life
and what would let him enjoy long time hobbies. His model railroad lay
out is not usable as is but if a small set up could be made on the main
level of the house,............................ Get someone to organise
things from the basement so tools, etc could be found and brought up for
track adjustment, etc. Time will tell; we're planning a trip up at the
end of March to help for a week.

Hope your dad
HN> does well too! Siblings giving
HN> feedback sometimes works sometimes not
 HN> (grin).

A couple are better on feedback than the other couple. We found that
out with a project last summer; same ones had same response or lack
there of. We're trying to prevent down the road "we didn't want this
done or even know about it" kind of reaction from siblings. BTW, how is
your mom doing this winter? Did she have snow from the latest system?

-> There are other people in the area that have worked for them or have
-> watched out for my parents over the years that are helping to some
-> extent now. One gave my mom a ride into town yesterday to pick up a few
-> groceries ahead of the storm--things like bread and milk. We're

HN> WEll it looks like they have a
HN> support network in place so
 HN> that's good news!

It is good that they have the help that they do with the family so
scattered. We have appreciated the outside help a lot; it's allowed us
a bit of relief knowing that we don't have to worry (quite so much)
about them. Just had a thought--wonder if there's a local Meals on
Wheels group that might be of help, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm................

... Gone crazy, be back later. leave a message at the Beep!
