=============
Hi Ruth,

-> usually set the cook book well aside whenever I'm using a knife. Partly
-> because the counter next to the sink (where I usually do my cutting) is
-> so small.

 RH> The only time I ever really got myself in the kitchen, it was on a
 RH> loaf of pumpernikel with a very hard crust. That one scarred.
 RH> Otherwise, my blood donations have been mainly feline-related.

I've done pretty well over the years--had some near misses but nothing
serious. I do have a small scar on my left thumb from one time in
college I was skinning some sausage with my pocket knife & the knife
slipped. Lost that knife about a year later when my purse was stolen; my
dad replaced it (the knife) for Christmas with one that wasn't as good
but worked for my needs (pencil sharpening mostly) until I got my Swiss
Army knife.

-> RH> Oh no. I gave her ideas ... will Steve forgive me?

-> He will, and he's looked at them as well. This set up cost maybe 1/10
-> of a long arm and our space will accomodate it. It's one I can set up
-> and take down as needed vs the more permanent set up of a long arm.

 RH> ...and it costs less than your last car. Those long-arm things
 RH> require a room of their own, almost, and cost about the same as a
 RH> Camry.

Yes, that's why we went with this set up.

->  RH> postage stamp with

-> Ours isn't much bigger. I can turn from the stove and put something
-> into the sink.

 RH> I have to move about three steps.

Bigger kitchen.

-> RH> of the one I've got. It didn't even have a hookup for a gas stove,
-> RH> and the space for the stove was shoved in a corner. If I'm going

-> I've seen some places (on HGTV) that have a double hot plate for a
-> stove, no oven.

 RH> That's not a kitchen, it's an emergency hookup. Either that or a New
 RH> York efficiency. Some of those have no kitchen at all. Maybe a dorm
 RH> fridge and a coffee maker, but that's it.

New generation of young adults who don't know how to cook. Take out,
fast food and microwaveable stuff is what they live on.

-> RH> construction I want twice the counter space I've got now,
-> not less. RH> There wasn't any room for a crock pot or rice cooker.

-> Way too small for me. These places supposedly had resident input on the
-> design but evidentally, not from serious cooks.

 RH> Definitely no cooks. It was a great kitchen for someone who eats two
 RH> food groups - frozen and take-out. All others should steer clear.

Well, we're making do with this place for another year. I can do some
serious cooking but just have to plan a bit more. Usually have to move
stuff from counter to counter to make room for the various stages but I
like to have everything I'm going to needd out before I start. Saves
hunting it down at a critical time, with messy hands. Hmmmmmmmm; I
wonder.......is it just me or do others here do the same thing? It will
be interesting to the feed back on this one.

-> buying new construction, RH> insist on designing your own kitchen.

-> For sure! I want a good sized one with lots of storage space, work space
-> and space just to feel comfortable in. I've had too many kitchens where
-> I've not had one or another that I've got some definate opinions of what
-> I want. If we build, I can get it, if we buy, we will either look for a
-> decent kitchen or one with remodeling potential.

 RH> I'd want a big farmhouse kitchen with new wiring and lots of counter
 RH> space. And a big, deep sink. A pot-filler over the stove wouldn't be
 RH> a bad thing either, especially for you. Or me, eventually.

Sounds good but the sink would have to be a double one for me. Possibly
a large one and a smaller, rinse sink like I had when we lived on post
at Fort Hood, TX. A walk in pantry is another "want".
