I saw my first one in the wild one night coming home from visiting some
friends when we lived in NC. It ran across the road some ways ahead of
our car--thought it was a dog at first but realised it had the wrong
form and was much bigger. Rachel was about 3 months old; we got a late
"new baby" cash gift a couple of days later and used part of it to buy
a stuffed black bear toy.  In turn, before Robert was born, she went to
a "Build A Bear Workshop" and made him a black bear.

When our girls were 5 and (almost) 7, we camped one night along the Blue
Ridge Parkway. I saw a sign at the camp ground asking that visitors
please secure (in the vehicle) all food because of bears--our girls were
a bit scared. We didn't see any bears but did see some deer in back of
our tent the next morning.

Looking them over, they look pretty good. Kalua pork can be done in the
crock pot too.
