There are people/firms/sharks/predators/slimy bastards (pick one) who make a
usurious whack from people who for one reason or another let their taxes go
owing for more than a year. If they go unpaid by the owner for more than three
years a "tax deed" is issued to the (whichever appellation you picked) for the
real estate 90 days after the end of the third year of arrearage.  A guy I know
who was battling cancer and some other health issues would have owed a total of
U$4200 (three years @ U$1400/year). As the taxes had been "sold" it cost him
over 7 thousand to redeem his crib. Literally had to hock the family jewels to
keep a roof over his head.

The properties in this tax auction are properties on which the taxes have not
been paid (by anyone) for more than three years. IOW - they are less than
desirable for one reason or another ... usually because the building(s) on the
property are not habitable or rentable. I have my eye on a couple of places
which will need the services of a back-hoe or bulldozer to clear the lot. But,
I have talked to both of my banks about a construction loan/mortgage should I
have a parcel. So, it's a do-able deal. Especially with bare lots, surveyed and
platted going for more than 10K ... before you bring in water, gas and sewer.

One place has a really junky old one story bungalow on it. I have talked to a
friend who is a Captain in the local fire department about using it (if I win
it) for a training exercise in a controlled burn. According to him that's a
thing that is done three or four times per year. And the bonus - besides
getting rid of the ratty structure is that the city cleans up the site.   Bv)=

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Firehouse Special
 Categories: Casseroles, Beef, Cheese, Chilies, Breads
      Yield: 8 servings
 
  1 1/2 lb Ground round
      1 sm Onion; diced
      1 tb Oil
 21 1/2 oz (2 cn) cream of chicken soup
 10 3/4 oz Soup can milk
      4 oz Green chilies; diced
     24    Corn tortillas
      1 lb Cheddar cheese; shredded
 
  Brown beef and onion in oil, stirring to crumble meat.

  Combine soup and milk in saucepan and cook, stirring, over
  medium heat until smooth. Then add chilies. Cut tortillas in 1
  inch squares and make 1 layer in baking dish using half of
  squares. Spread with layer of half of cooked meat, then with
  half of soup mixture and half of cheese. Repeat layers.

  Bake at 325øF/160øC for 20-30 minutes.
