Dunno how widespread it is...but as I recall the event:  Decades ago my dear
old
dad decided to go fish in his brother-in-laws stock pond.  This being outside
of
Stillwater OK and we were on our way to Hawaii, driving from Dover DE to SF and
then a ship on over.  He caught some fish, perch or something like that and put
them on a stringer tied to a small tree.  He continued to fish and then noticed
that the fish on the stringer were really getting frisky.  He started to pull
the stringer out of the water and found a watermoccasin trying to steal his
fish.  He decided he didn't really want any fish afterall.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Ernest T. Bass's Chicken Thief Stew
 Categories: Soup/stew
      Yield: 1 Servings

           -all purpose flour
      4 lb Chicken, cut in pieces
    1/2 c  Oil
    1/2 c  Onions, chopped
      3 c  Canned tomatoes
      1 c  Water
  1 1/2 tb Salt
      1 tb Worcestershire sauce
    1/4 ts Cayenne pepper
      2 ts Sugar
      3 c  Whole kernel corn
      3 c  Lima beans

  Ernest T. doesn't chew his cabbage twice, but he always come back for
  more of this.

  Flour the chicken.  In a large stock pot brown the chicken in the
  oil. Add the onions and cook until the onions are clear, stirring
  occasionally. Add the tomatoes, water, and seasonings.  Cover and
  simmer until the chicken is almost tender.  Take the chicken out of
  the stew and remove the bones and skin.  Leave the chicken meat in
  fairly large pieces. Return the chicken to the stew and add the corn
  and lima beans. Continue cooking until the vegetables are tender.
  Serve hot.

  VARIATION: If preferred, 2 lbs of boneless cubed veal or beef may be
  substituted, but stolen chicken is cheaper.  Serves 8.
