That pretty much describes the "Smokie" which is very popular in
western Canada (and at my home).

The best ones I have ever had are Mundare Sausage made in Mundare,
Alberta by a Ukrainian chap, Woytko Stawnichy, and his family but
they are only distributed regionally (northern Alberta and the
Yellowknife Co-Op) so you'll have a rather hard time finding them.

They have recently been bought out by Maple Leaf Foods, Canada's
largest meat packer, who plan an expansion and two more plants to be
located in B.C. and Ontario with a view of national distribution,
without compromising quality. As they have previously acquired
Schneider's, Shopsy's and Mitchell's without compromising them, there
is hope.

Mitchell's make the best quality bacon available in a supermarket.
It is well trimmed and lean, thick cut and double smoked. Naturally
cured and smoked with none of that vile yellow liquid pissing out of
it when you cook it. It normally sells for $12.99 per kg but is
occasionally on sale at $8.99 or $9.99 at which time I stock up on
it and get 5 kgs.

My mom went to university with a Schneider granddaughter and the
Shopsy daughter. The former's family owned the largest meat company
in Canada at the time and came to school in a chauffeur driven limo.
The Shopsy family back then had just one deli and a butcher shop
but were growing. She took the street car to school and worked in
the family business evenings and weekends.
          
Shopsy's Deli in Toronto was very similar in style and quality to
Schwartz's in Montreal. It was just as plain, had the same type of
Romanian Jewish pastrami and a similar menu. There were lots of
faded, blown up, autographed photos on the wall with the original
owner together with some celebrity diner including Joe Louis, Frank
Sinatra and King George the 6th of England.
