A little story from the past....

When my parents met, Dad was chief chemist at the Dominion Magnesium
mine doing quality control analysis of the output... refined
magnesium. Mom was a federal government chemist also doing
impurities analysis on the ingots. The government was the sole
purchaser because during WWII magnesium was a strategic metal and
the government controlled its distribution. She had the following
conversation with HR:

Mabel: "Civil servants are supposed to have parity with the private
sector. Harry makes $225 a month and I earn $220. I want a five
dollar raise as our job descriptions are identical."

HR jerk: "They're not identical. He has to go into the foundry with
a drill and get metal filings out of hot ingots, which he then
splits with you."

M: "That raises my second point. If I don't take my own samples the
integrity of my analysis is compromised. I should get my own."

HRJ: You can't go in there. It's all male and you would have to
climb a ladder and pass over a catwalk in a dress."

M: Then I shall wear slacks.

HRJ: You can't do that either; there is a dress code."

M: Then this is what we shall do... I will come to work in a dress
and wear the damned  dress in the lab and the office. But I shall
also bring a pair of slacks and a shirt to work, change in the
women's room closest to the foundry, go up the ladder, get my own
bloody samples so that my work is not compromised, come down, change
again, and go to the lab. And you will re-write my job description
and give me that bloody $5 raise."

(She got the raise.)

      Title: Kim's Pacific Salmon
 Categories: Canadian, Salmon
      Yield: 4 servings
 
      4    Pacific salmon fillets;
      4 oz each, skinned
      2    Shallots; finely chopped
    1/2 c  White wine
    1/2 c  Water
           SAUCE:
      2    Shallots; finely chopped
      1 c  Fish stock
      1 c  White wine
      2 tb Lemon juice
    1/2 c  Butter
      2 tb Dill; finely chopped
           -Salt and pepper
 
  "When they're tired of B.C. salmon, they're tired of life," says
  Defence Minister Kim Campbell, paraphrasing 18th century British
  writer, Samuel Johnson. Being from Vancouver, it's not surprising
  that salmon is her favorite food."
  
  Combine shallots, salmon, wine and water in frying pan large enough
  to hold fillets in a single layer. Cover and bring liquid to just a
  simmer. Poach salmon about 2 minutes per side. Remove and keep warm.
  Reserve stock for sauce.
  
  Sauce: In a saucepan, bring shallots, stock, wine and lemon juice to a
  boil. Cook till liquid is reduced by half. Strain. Cut butter into
  small cubes. whisk into mixture one piece at a time. Do not let boil.
  Season with dill, salt and pepper. Serve warm. Serve with asparagus.

MMMMM

Kim Campbell was Canada's first and so far only female prime
minister. In 1993, Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney retired
just before an election. The Conservative party chose Campbell as
party leader automatically making her prime minister. She was quite
capable but Canada was thoroughly sick of Mulroney and Conservative
policies and voted overwhelmingly Liberal in the following election
putting the Liberal party leader Jean Cretin in power, so she only
served for 3 months mainly during parliament's summer recess and
never got a chance to show what she was capable of. Said a pundit at
the time: "Taking over the party leadership from Brian (Mulroney)
was a lot like taking over the controls of a 747 just before it
plunges into the Rockies."
