A strange looking plane.  Sometimes called "Skymaster", which was
confusing as Douglas had also used that name for the DC4 airliner.

Like most people these days buy cars with power steering and brakes.

Although I haven't had your sort of direct experience of manual
controls except in a sailplane, I would expect that for a long
distance level flight, the trimmer tabs on the control surfaces could
be adjusted to maintain altitude and direction, with only occasional
re-adjustment.  Your experience would have made you appreciate the
achievements of the pioneer aviators who first crossed the Pacific in
a tri-motor Fokker, in, I think, 1927.

      Title: Pacific Rim Stir-Fry
 Categories: Beef, Main dish, Magazine
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
     20 oz Pineapple chunks, in juice
      1 tb Ginger; freshly grated
      1 tb Soy sauce
    1/4 c  Cilantro; chopped
    3/4 lb Round steak; thinly sliced
           -on diagonal
      1 tb Vegetable oil
      1    Clove garlic; minced
    1/2 ts Cornstarch
    1/2 c  Green beans; fresh; trimmed
      1    Red bell pepper; sliced
      1 tb Green chilies; chopped
           -canned
      2    Green onions; chopped
 
  Drain pineapple, reserving 1 cup chunks and 1/2 cup juice. Refrigerate
  remaining chunks and juice for desserts and other recipes. Combine
  1/2 cup pineapple juice, ginger, soy sauce, cilantro and meat in
  medium-size bowl. Cover the bowl and marinate in refrigerator for 30
  minutes. Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.
  add garlic and saute for 30 seconds or until fragrant. Remove meat
  from marinade and add to skillet; stir-fry 5 minutes or until meat is
  just cooked through. Remove meat; keep warm.  Mix together the
  remaining marinade and cornstarch. Add green beans, red pepper,
  chilies and marinade mixture to skillet. Stir-fry over medium heat 5
  minutes until vegetables are crisp-tender and mixture thickens. Stir
  in the 1 cup of pineapple chunks, green onion and meat. Gently heat
