Some species/varieties are tarter than others but all true
strawberries are edible and tasty. There is another look-alike genus
in the same family known as "mock strawberries" which although not
poisonous are barely edible. They are sometimes grown as foliage
plants.

There are numerous cultivars. My friend "Dutch Farmer Bill" is a
second generation market gardener with several acres under
cultivation. As a kid I picked for his dad. The main commercial crop
was the typical conical, firm, large fruit with a white core that
you see in grocery stores. They are hardy, high yielding and ship
and store well, but don't have as much taste or juice as many
heirloom varieties. He also grew another berry in a smaller patch
for his own table and for the local pick your own crowd. They were
smaller, round, soft, red to the core and very juicy. They would get
squashed under their own weight in a punnet, which is why they
couldn't be packed and shipped. Much nicer tasting though. About half
the yield per acre (and twice as expensive to pick, as pickers get
paid by the quart). It's been 45 years so I don't recall the names
of those two varieties.

      2    Punnets fresh ripe
           -strawberries
      6 tb Grand Marnier
      2 tb Castor sugar
           Double thick cream
           Rolled chocolate wafers
 
  This dessert, as the name implies, is simply divine.
  
  Hull strawberries and marinate in Grand Marnier and sugar for
  an hour.
  
  Presentation: Serve strawberries with a healthy dollop of double thick
  cream and rolled wafers.

      Title: Spinach and Strawberry Salad
 Categories: Salads, Fruit
      Yield: 4 Servings

      4 c  baby spinach torn into bite
           -size pieces
      2    shallots, minced
      8 lg strawberries sliced
           DRESSING:
      2 tb olive oil
      4 ts orange juice
      2 ts balsamic vinegar
    1/4 ts salt
           white pepper
  
  Mix together salad ingredients and pour dressing over top. Serve
  immediately.
