Actually, it was noise. Most of the 727s flying recently have
been fitted with JT8D series engines such as made by the father
of CT Ruth and don't produce any smokier exhaust than most other
planes. The 3-in-the-rear configuration and the lack of adequate
hushkits were factors in the demise of the line.

Indeed. Whatever was on the bargain table at LSG Skychefs
that day, I reckon.

I was at New York in a storm once, and our plane - number
fiftysomething for takeoff - had to do just that. Also, just
a few weeks ago, the same thing happened at the same airport
but in reasonably clear weather. I'm not sure what the excuse
was that time. I thought it would make more sense for the
controllers to call just a few planes at a time to go out
expeditiously to the runway and do their thing. But then, oh,
the wind changed, we have to switch runways, oh, it's raining,
oh, there are turtles on the runway, oh, oh, oh.

My Mom's Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins

Yield: 12 regular size muffins

1/2 c butter
1 1/4 c sugar
1/2 ts salt
2 lg eggs
2 c all-purpose flour
2 ts baking powder
1/2 c whole milk
1 ts vanilla
1 pt blueberries, rinsed and patted dry
1 ts sugar for blueberries
1 ts cinnamon for blueberries

Place rack in center of oven and preheat to 375F.
Line a 12-mold regular size muffin pan with paper
muffins cups.

Using a hand mixer, cream butter, sugar, and salt
until soft. Add eggs, and mix until light and fluffy.
Mix the flour and baking powder, and stir into the
batter, alternating with the milk. Stir in the vanilla.
Mix until just incorporated.

This is my mom's tip, and it works beautifully: In a
small bowl, sprinkle blueberries with 1 ts each sugar
and cinnamon. Gently toss until well coated. Fold into
the batter. Spoon batter into the 12 muffin cups.

Bake for 25-30 min or until the tops are light gold
and a cake tester inserted into the center of a muffin
comes out clean. Transfer the pan to a rack to cool
5 min before removing each muffin and placing on a
wire rack to cool.
