I think I may have found a solution to your problem.

Okay, that rules one possibility out, which means that what I will post
has a good shot at fixing it.

That "huh?" territory is one I encounter frequently too. Especially
since I use Fedora Linux which is admittedly a version that innovates
and incorporates changes that have a good chance of breaking things that
worked fine in the past. I've gotten good at searches, both general
internet and Fedora Forums in particular for chasing down solutions to
problems.

This is one that I think may resolve the issues you have been having:

I thought firefox was slow as well. Here is the answer!

1. Backup your Bookmarks (Use MozBackup)
2. Do NOT backup Addons!
3. Make a list of Addons that you have installed. Yes, you must reinstall.
4. If you have Addons like Speed Dial, backup settings.
5. Use IObit Unistall Programs. Uninstall all traces of previous Firefox
installations.
6. Install Firefox 8
7. Import Bookmarks with MozBackup restore
8. Re-install plugins
9. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!
If you have been updating firefox for many versions, chances are there is
some corruption that is causing the latest browser to run slow.

What I described above is a fresh install retaining all bookmarks & Addons.

I think that when one upgrades to several versions, that some corruption
occurs somewhere that is compounded when the version is upgraded. The
good thing about this solution is that one leaves you with a fresh
installation with no carry-overs from past versions.
