It was time. Saddest thing is that he used to eat butter
every morning (Annie's brother Rob taught him to do this),
and when they got Zach, they would breakfast together. Now
Zach doesn't eat breakfast any more.

Cat rundown. All Birmans or part Birman.

Bizzy - the oldest, unrelated, I think, the only cat who
moved with them from Denver to Phoenix to Williamsport. I
could be wrong, but the only one not bred by Linda, Annie's
cat breeder friend who dumps unshowable cats on her. I like
Linda okay, but she makes neurotic cats, which leads me to
believe that she doesn't raise them as humanely as she should
- or give them proper attention or something. There are other
things that give me pause about Linda and her husband. Annie
and Billy rail on about the Amish puppy mills, but they fail
to see the similarity with Linda's operation, which luckily
is no longer commercially active, so I don't have to get
bent out of shape about it. Bizzy was the only one of the
cats I actually enjoyed at all.

Shalimar - now the oldest, retired grand champion, expected
to die but keeps ticking, thanks to fluid injection 3x a week.
Shalimar and I have become sort of friends, as she's always
thirsty, and I let her drink in the kitchen sink.

Jupiter - another thoroughbred but unshowable for some reason,
probably because he bites. I have never been bitten or clawed
by him, still being too fast.

Xachery (Zach) - formerly the #1 stud cat on the farm, now
retired. Father of Jupiter. Meanass cat. Deaf as a post, as
a result of having lived under the computer for a long time.

Lola - bastard of a Turkish Van and Jupiter's mother, conceived
when the cattery was burglarized two or three years. Sneaky
little bitch. Steals food. Annie got her in anticipation of
losing Shally - actually, Linda came over to visit and (though
she wasn't supposed to) brought two cats just to show, ha ha.
Lola is considered very pretty and is a calico, unlike the
fullblooded Birmans, who have very specific colorations on
a white or tan background.

If you know about the naming conventions, you will note that
these names are all over the place and don't seem to follow the
rules; that's because there are official (show) names and the
everyday ones. Bizzy's real name is Unfinished Business, as he
was born in the U year, which according to my calculations
was 1997. Xachery was from the X year, 2000 I suppose. The
others, I don't know their real names.

Veal Sauerbraten

1.5 kg veal shoulder without bone
Pepper from the mill
2 bn greens
1 large onion
2 garlic cloves
2 bay leaves
1 dried chili pepper
8 whole allspice
6 juniper berries
125 ml dry white wine
125 ml water
6 Tb wine vinegar
6 Tb extra virgin olive oil
Salt
 
Rub the veal shoulder with a damp cloth. Rub black pepper
generously into the meat. Clean and wash the greens, and
cut the peeled onion into small cubes. Finely chop the
peeled garlic. Put meat in a plastic bag just big enough
to hold it. Add the seasonings, onion, and garlic. Pour
in the wine, water, and vinegar and seal the bag tightly.
Let the meat marinate 2 days in a cool place. Remove, dry
well and coat with oil. Let the meat rest for 2 hr. Grill,
turning frequently and brushing with remaining oil, for
90 min. Season with salt. Cover in foil to let rest 10 min
before slicing.
