===========================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Austria is like Scotland in that it is a small country, but half the
GJ> population couldn't wait to leave it and go all over the world,
GJ> telling everyone how wonderful their homeland is.
ML> Sort of like the residents of another country that sounds sort
ML> of like Austria and is occasionally confused with it.

One distinct difference being that the Austrians usually stay abroad,
in Germany, California, Australia, etc, while the citizens of that
other country to which I think you refer tend to return home after
informing the ignorant and deprived peoples of lesser countries about
the delights to be experienced in their Antipodean paradise.

GJ> Austrian friend once told me off for taking what she saw as an unfair
GJ> advantage of a mutual acquaintance, "After all, he is only a German!"
ML> More and more! And how, pray, did you take advantage? of a male?

The German had just finished building and painting a beautiful work
boat, and was hoping to earn some money with it, taking tourists for
cruises or similar. At that time the Works Dept at Popondetta (2 days
run down the coast) ran out of petrol, and no other means of getting
fuel there was available, so I hired that lovely boat, filling it up
with dozens and dozens of greasy 44 gallon drums of petrol, and
persuaded the owner to deliver them to Popondetta. The paint was a
bit scratched, the deck was dirty, and the boat didn't look quite as
pristine as before the trip. And so my friend, Maxie criticised me.
(She later got her coastal shipping captain's ticket, and when last
heard of was running a 100 ton coastal freighter around the islands.)

GJ> While Vienna is a rather cold show place, with beautiful buildings and
GJ> lots of Ooo-Ahh tourists, the inhabitants of smaller towns and
GJ> villages further out along the Danube are very friendly

ML> I don't find it cold at all. It's just got this undercurrent
ML> of racism plus a touch of Disneylike commercialism that
ML> irritates me. Vienna is a city that I dislike but will return
ML> to periodically because of what it has to offer.

I noticed that the Viennese took themselves seriously and did not
smile much. Re racism there, I have just watched the televised 2012
New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic, playing mainly works by
members of the Strauá family, but very well done. The Vienna Boys'
Choir also took part, and to my surprise included some definitely
non-Caucasian lads. Another fairly recent innovation was the
inclusion in the orchestra of a Woman! Just one, and she only
appeared very briefly in the TV camera, so they didn't harp on it.

GJ> of the old time hospitality. The capital city to countryside
GJ> relationship is rather like that of Paris to country France in that
 GJ> respect.
ML> Luckily the attitude doesn't extend too much past the borders
ML> of Paris, either. I think big cities in general are prone to
 ML> this kind of thing.

Even in Manila the city residents refer disparagingly to the people
from the rural barrios as "bakya", which is the name given to the
simple wooden sandals worn by the country folk.

 ML> ==

GJ> I lasted little over an hour, cross-legged on the floor,
GJ> before the pain level became too high, and I called it quits and went
GJ> home, unfortunately missing the lunch break.
ML> People probably whispered afterward about the intoxicated
ML> old gentleman and wondered if he was okay.

I think they had seen before how some of the more elderly gentlemen
suffered. After I had seated, I noticed that the more senior Sikhs
had cannily parked themselves with their backs to the side wall for
extra support. It was too late for me to move there, though; all
spaces were taken.

ML> 41C, eh. Last night it was 50 degrees lower here (that's 90 degrees
ML> colder, to us'ns). I guess you didn't get a new jersey sweater for
 ML> Christmas.

We had the hottest New Year's Day for over 100 Years.
