It is very worrying that the great multitude listen to these people
religiously as to priests, and follow what they say. Does this mean
that these "nutritionists" are leading America down paths leading to
greater nutritional disaster, or does it mean that the people would be
in an even worse state without the nutritionists?

A recent BBC TV doco, "How to live to 101 without trying", dealt with
several communities with an above average incidence of centenarians.
The top group were the residents of Okinawa, with over 900 in a
population of a million.  They ate frugally, leaving the table when
only 80% full, and remained healthy and capable of independent living
well into their 90s.  Some of them, however, who had gone to live in
Hawaii and adopted the USAn nutritional habits, dropped off the twig
at an earlier age than the locals.

My favourite group of oldies lived in a small village in Sardinia, ate
hugely of roast lamb washed down with plenty of red wine, and sang and
danced into their 90s and 100s.  It turns out that they were somewhat
inbred, but with a particular gene that gave them such long life.

The longest-lived USAns were the Sevenday Adventists in Loma Linda,
but they worked at caring for the "temple" of their body, with
vegetarian diet, exercise and faith.

You are certainly fortunate in that respect.  I became worried
recently when my local GP had to have a heart by-pass operation.  He
has never advised me on my lifestyle, and on my annual medical check
for my driver's licence, always puts me down as a "moderate drinker".
