=============
Hi Dave,

DD> Nanook managed to locate some information that the dish was invented
DD> by a Thai cook in a Thai restaurant in Hawaii. Just from the name I

RH> There was one who was big while we were there but I think he had
RH> residency problems. Chai Chawaseria (not sure on last name but was long
 RH> and started with Ch). Don't know if he's still as popular as he was;
RH> for that matter, don't hear much about the Pacific Rim chefs/cooking as
RH> we did 10 years ago.

DD> I was only in Hawaii one time -- in 1962 we landed at NAS Barber's
DD> Point to refuel and stretch our legs and eat some non-box lunch food
DD> before flying off to Midway. And truthfully, while I managed to

At least it was a free ride. (G) Now Barber's Point is all private
housing.

DD> circumnavigate the globe I didn't see/experience much of it. One
DD> military airfield looks much like any other. And one military chow
DD> hall .... I saw a lot of ocean pass below our plane and some land.
DD> But, we were high enough that details were lacking.

And no pilot narration to go with it. At least you had windows; cargo
aircraft doesn't in the section in back of the cockpit.

DD> would have assumed that it was one of those fruity umbrella drinks
DD> from some Tiki bar like Trader Schtick's (Trader Vic's).

RH> Can't prove it by me; I never went there.

DD> Me neither. I knew, even in my younger and more gullible days, that
DD> Vic Bergeron was just using the South Pacific Tiki bar thing as a
DD> marketing schtick and upcharging accordingly.

it sure brought him the money tho.

 DD> Title: Woodchuck Pie
 DD> Categories: Game, Pastry, Vegetables
 DD> Yield: 7 Servings

RH> Keep it; I've seen enough of the critters. John Burroughs is famous for
RH> saying "shoot one and seven come to its funeral"; not too far off the
RH> truth there. He named one of the buildings on his property "Woodchuck
RH> Lodge". He was born and raised about 15 miles from where I was.

DD> I've killed in the neighbourhood of a thousand of them. They are a
DD> fact of life for Midwest farm families. Haven't eaten many of them,
 DD> though.

I've neither killed nor eaten any. My dad was not a hunter, neither were
either of my brothers whle growing up. After he left the house, my
younger brother hunter. Took him years to kill his first deer; killed a
bear with his truck tho.

RH> BTW, we talked with my parents the other night; the town is still
RH> without a grocery store since the remnants of Irene took the only one
RH> out in late August. They were going gung ho on getting up & running
RH> again but the latest is that the interest has fallen off. The town
RH> really took a beating from that and flooding a couple of weeks later.
RH> Dad said they had 2 "hundred year" floods in 15 years; one in 1996
RH> knocked out the store that was on the location before. They rebuilt,
RH> then sold out to the current folks several years ago. There's not
RH> really any good place on higher ground to rebuild in the town itself so
RH> folks are really hurting for getting food, especially the elderly and
RH> those who can't drive the 25 miles or so to the nearest town with a
 RH> supermarket.

DD> That's pretty sucky. Were I younger I might look into opening a

Quite so! Part of it is NYC wanting to make sure their reservoir water
is kept uncontaminated (as if it were possible to do so totally).

DD> neighbourhood style grocery store there. Sounds like an opportunity to
DD> fill a need and make some money doing so. One of the towns on one of

If the right place could be found, it would be a blessing for that town.

DD> my delivery routes lost its family-owned stupormarkup when the third
DD> generation heir discovered white powdered nose candy and high stakes
DD> poker. Citizens have had to shop in an even smaller town (which has a
DD> well-run IGA store) or the Sav-A-Lot which took over the closed store
DD> of the same mini-chain in the next town north.

At least there are reasonable options nearby. Seems like the 3rd
generation has a penchant for running the family business into the
ground; it's happening with the newspaper my dad used to work for.
Family made their money in IBM early on so the paper was not needed for
the income as it was at one time.

DD> I noticed yesterday that the FOR SALE sign on the property has been
DD> changed to SOLD and that contractor trucks were dotting the parking
DD> lot. So, there is hope that the citizens of Virden can quit figuring
DD> gasoline costs into their grocery shopping.

Good sign there. You don't have mountain roads in winter to contend with
either.

DD> Title: Trader Vic's Chicken Salad
DD> Categories: Poultry, Fruits, Nuts, Vegetables, Salads
 DD> Yield: 7 servings

Looks pretty good, actually.

DD> * Having never eaten this at Trader Vic's or anywhere
DD> else I cannot say what sort of Chinese Noodles to use.
DD> Adding the noodles just before serving implies Chow Mein
DD> noodles. But, Shanghai-style noodles could work, also.

I suspect more the former but you never know.

Catch you later,
