Ärende: Kugluktuk tales

Roslind has returned from her second trip, full of northern tales.

She had set up a cardboard box next to her hotel window and
insulated it by covering it with a blanket to hold her perishable
groceries but she overdid it and they all froze. It got down to as
low as -48 C (-54 F) there, which is really bitter for March.

The visiting vegan was back and came better equipped this time but
she too froze most of her perishables. And she really started
craving protein and fat because of the cold. Towards the end of the
week she allowed herself some fish poached in butter, rationalizing
that fish are much less self aware than mammals, and felt the better
for it.

(We had a cold spell here as well, hitting -38 C one night, which was
especially hard to take as we had enjoyed a record breaking mild
winter. All through Dec to Feb. we had temps about 12 degrees above
normal with highs as low as -1 and just one night's low below -32.
That warmer weather also brought far more snow than usual.)

Kugluktuk was the site of the regional playoffs to determine which
team would represent Nunavut in hockey at the Arctic Winter Games
(attended by Greenland, Nunavut, Labrador, Nunavik (the Inuit
section of northern Quebec), the NWT, northern Alberta, the Yukon,
Alaska and Russia. The tournament tended to overshadow everything
else and Roslind sat through a lot of skipped appointments as a
result. She might as well have gone to the arena to be a spectator.

As well First Air pulled two planes out of regular service for
hockey charters and as hardly anyone else was travelling for any
other reason that week was able to combine three routes into one.
But this meant she returned home (which is southwest of Kuggie-town)
by flying northeast to Taloyak and then Goa Haven, turning a 1 hour
and 40 minute flight into a 7 hour marathon. Kugluktuk to
Yellowknife via Taloyak and Goa Haven is like going from Denver to
Tucson via Chicago and Detroit.

The flight attendant used to be one of Roslind's favourite high
school students and fondly called her Mom. After hearing that she
lost her groceries and ate crap food at the hotel for 9 days
straight she rounded up two extra salads for lunch and did it again
again for supper, which were gratefully received, along with several
bottles of fruit juice.
