It's a relatively safe drug but better diet is categorically
superior to medication whenever possible in my admittedly biased
opinion.

OK, you already know about the gastrointestinal upset: diarrhea,
cramps and flatulence. It also causes nausea for some people
(including Roslind) and is contraindicated for people with
hypothyroidism (Roslind again... her thyroid glands were cancerous
and removed some time ago and she survives by taking synthroid).

It also reduces testosterone in men.

She cut out all refined sugars, cut back somewhat on fruit, started
using agave syrup (in very small amounts), reduced her intake of red
meat and fat, especially meat with nitrates, replaced some of but
not all of the missing protein with nuts and seeds, especially
walnuts, which have some special beneficial effect/ingredient the
details of which I've forgotten, increased her consumption of
vegetables especially brassicas and pulses, cut back on white flour,
potatoes, white pasta and white rice replacing them with whole
grains and yellow/orange starchy vegetables, really reduced her
consumption of processed foods of all kinds, eats less overall, in
smaller portions by having five small meals a day and now eats foods
in the following order: quickly and easily digested foods first
(fruit, then vegetables), slower to digest foods (starchy stuff)
next and lastly meats. As well she drinks less alcohol than before
and sticks to dry wine and spirits, avoiding liqueurs and mixes. We
don't know which of these things are helping and which are useless
but collectively she benefits for the regime. She was in the 10-12
range before treatment, Metformin got her down to the 7 and 8 level
but good diet alone got her down to the 5s and 6s without the gas
problems. Even the crucifers and beans don't bother her that way
anymore. After a few initial weeks of cravings she no longer has any
desire for the foods she's eliminated and likes her new choices. And
she dropped 10 pounds.

I eat her way at supper when I'm with her but carry on with my old
habits at lunch so I am getting half the benefit.

Craving the forbidden eh? She doesn't even like looking at such
things any more.
