They are. You have to be really optimistic to mistake a false
morel from a real one, and even most false morels are if not
particularly tasty also not particularly harmful (with notable
exceptions, Gyromitra esculenta - which depending on the strain
and the preparation can be harmless, slightly poisonous,
carcinogenic, or fatal, and some of the saddle fungi). There
was talk at one point of morels causing severe diarrhea, and
people bruited about the possibility that the things were
evolving rapidly and peskily to take their revenge on us
epicures, but it turns out (Weller discovered, using an
Internet search in the early days of Internet searches) that
raw or undercooked morels were the culprit, and all raw
mushrooms contain alien substances that we ourselves have
not evolved to be able to digest - the name of one of which,
trehalose, even by itself evokes alienness. There was an
article once reporting a mutant Morchella containing
amanitoid toxins, but that was eventually traced back to a
mycology publication's April 1 editorial that wasn't meant to
be appreciated or misinterpreted by a wider audience.

ntf, but seldom are experienced mushroomers done in by their
own practices - perhaps less frequently than experienced drivers
are killed in car crashes.

2.1% by weight anyway. But the relevance of that fact is open to
debate. I'd just as soon eat 2 lb of bacon (raw, crisp, or flabby,
makes no difference) as an ounce of brains to get the same amount
of cholesterol.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.01

      Title: Morels with Calvados
 Categories: Appetizers, Cyberealm
      Yield: 4 servings

      1 tb Unsalted Butter
      1 lb Morel Mushrooms, sliced
           Lengthwise
           Lemon Juice
           Salt and Pepper
    1/4 c  Calvados
    1/2 c  Heavy Cream
      1 ts Fresh Tarragon, chopped or
    1/2 ts Dried Tarragon
           Hot Cooked Pasta

  Melt butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Saute morels in
  butter, sprinkling with lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste. Cook,
  stirring often, until morels give up all their liquid, about 6
  minutes. Stir in Clavados, then cream. Boil gently to reduce sauce
  and thicken slightly. Stir in tarragon. Serve as an appetizer over
  hot cooked pasta.
