DD> According to Don less than a standard GMC/McNeilus garbage truck
DD> full of waste goes to the landfill each day from the production lines.
GJ> What is wasted? Did he say? What can't be used as food or something.
DD> Very little. 200K birds at an average on-the-"hoof" weight of 4 lb
DD> (1.8kg) is 400 tons (363 metric tons) of chicken to process. Less than
DD> 8 tons (7.25 metric tons) of waste is less than .02% waste. IOW - not a
 DD> lot.

GJ> Ahem, Einstein! Better you check your maths. I make it 2%; still,

DD> As Dale pointed out to me. I should have caught that ... but, in my
 DD> defence, my
DD> calculator is a solar powered floppy disk looking thing and the % and
DD> / keys are quite close to each other. I went searching on Google and

Excuses, excuses!

DD> e-Bay to try and whistle up an image -- no joy. I may have a rare item
DD> here. It's a left over from when I had the confuser store and sold C=
DD> and Amiga computers ... and I certainly moved a bunch of them out the
 DD> door @ U$2.95 ea.

I have a wooden solar calculator, with a picture of a Toyota BJ-40
carved on the front of it. I was given it as a present when I visited
the factory in about 1987. I mainly use an even older Canon F-73
Scientific calculator which still operates on the original battery.
It has the useful feature of automatically switching off if neglected.

DD> As to what goes in the bins - I have no idea. Probably stuff that has
DD> gotten contaminated for some reason. I first thought feet ... but, no,
DD> besides pet/animal food I have recipes for chicken feet and we have
 DD> discussed the topic

Feet can be delicious. These days they are a more or less standard
item in some Chinese restaurants here, particularly as yum cha.

GJ> When I was adopted by an escapee from someone's coop, I noted that it
GJ> was very quick to catch and eat most of a baby sparrow which had
GJ> fallen from its nest. Chooks are complete omnivores.
GJ> I wonder what poultry fed on the output of a coconut cream factory
 GJ> would taste like?
DD> Sweet, probably. Most of the dishes I have had labelled "Coconut
DD> (whatever)" have been sweeter than I like in anything save a dessert
 DD> course.

I would hope not. It could be that you associate coconut with
sweetness because a lot of coconut cream/milk sold in USA is sweetened
and used for desserts or pina coloda. I normally get my coconut as
powder, blocks or Asian cans. I do like the chicken-coconut
combination of flavours.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Chicken Curry (Gaeng Gari Gai)
 Categories: Chileheads, Poultry, Curry
      Yield: 2 Servings

     12 oz Sliced Chicken Breast
16 oz Can of coconut milk
12 oz Water or Chicken Stock
      2 tb Ground Peanuts
      1 tb Sugar (optional)
2 oz Fish Sauce (to taste)
      5 Thai Basil Leafs
      2 oz Yellow Curry Paste
1/2 ts Ground Red Chile (to
           Taste)!

Start heating a sauteed pan over medium heat. Open the can of coconut
milk, being carefull not to shake it. Scoop some of the cream off the
top and heat with curry paste until you see the oil starting to
separate from the coconut milk. Add the sugar, Chicken, water or
stock, and the rest of the coconut milk and mix together. When the
Chicken is almost finished, add the Fish Sauce, Peanuts, Basil, Red
Chili and Bell Peppers. Let simmer for 10 minutes and serve.

note: You may substitute with Coconut Milk Concentrate for the canned
Coconut Milk and the Dry Chili with Fresh Chilies. The Dry Chili
seems to add more of a roasted nutty flavor.

To make your own coconut milk, grate the white meat from a fresh
coconut, making sure the gratings are very small. The fine side of a
cheese grater works fine. Take the gratings and put in a piece of
muslim or cheese cloth. add some very warm water and make into a ball
for squeezing. Squeeze like hell, getting all the liquid you can out
of the gratings. This first squeeze is the most highly concentrated.
One more time is possible, but it will be more diluted than the first
  squeeze.

Cook with Thailand curry paste being sold in the market, or make your
  own
