 ML> And here,
GJ> former Ansett employees have only just now been given some sort of
GJ> partial compensation for lost long service leave and similar.

ML> Were they entitled contractually? If so, they should have
ML> been compensated according to their position in the list
 ML> of creditors in bankruptcy.

They would have been members of the Union, which would have
represented their interests, however Ansett's assets were far less
than had been hoped, and there have been protracted court procedures,
with many creditors scrapping over the crumbs.

GJ> I think I have heard of a non-fatal level crossing accident to this
GJ> tilt train in the distant past, but no trouble recently. I don't
GJ> think it tilts very far.

ML> Strikes me the faster the trip and the sharper the curve,
ML> the more the tilt. This particular tilt train was carrying

There would be limits to the degree of tilt, and a corresponding limit
to the speed on a minimum radius curve. The remote possibility of the
train coming to an emergency stop on a banked curve also has to be
considered. Then the tilt would have to be the other way, to avoid
slopping the soup in the dining car.

ML> some high official, who was supposed to be sitting in the
ML> first car with all his first-class buddies, only at the
ML> moment of the crash he had cleverly made his way to the
ML> dining car for his supper. Most of the fatalities and
ML> injuries were in the first car. He of course claimed a
ML> leftist assassination plot and then was hit with a leftist
ML> counterclaim that his party had arranged the accident,
ML> only it had gone worse than planned.

As with accidents to normally safe aeroplanes, the post-mortems of
train accidents are of great engineering interest. It is rare that a
single factor is responsible, but usually an accident results from a
Greek tragedy of a sequence of faults.

GJ> My friend who is getting married in Rockhampton is a vegetarian,
GJ> living in the main centre of Australia for cattle raising, rodeos, and
 GJ> hard drinking.
ML> I presume she loves horses and survives on alcohol and
ML> doesn't go out to eat much.

She loves dogs, cats and good wine, and has found an ashram. Her
wedding to her tiny Japanese beau will be barefoot in the sandhills by
the beach. I do not expect seafood to be served at the dinner, but
she has promised plenty of wine. As Rockhampton is tropical, the
sandhills should be comfortable for sleeping...

GJ> I don't trust people who appear sane and well-adjusted; their
GJ> psychosis must be really terrible for them to have to hide it.
ML> There are a select few whose illnesses are too well concealed
ML> for me to detect, if they exist at all. My mechanism of action
ML> is to treat people as rational until proven otherwise, which
ML> usually happens pretty early on.

I tend to be cautious until I can detect a person's particular
underlying form of nuttiness.

ML> There was a famous American baseball player, Tyrus Cobb, whose
ML> father decided for obscure reasons one night to enter his
ML> bedroom by the window, whereupon mother got the revolver from
ML> the nightstand and blew her husband away. This incident is
ML> used as an explanation why the younger Cobb was afflicted with
ML> mental issues, including uncontrollable rage, for the rest of
 ML> his life.

The moral of the story is not to keep loaded guns anywhere near
people, even if you fear your neighbours. A locked window is safer.

while lightly beating eggs and pepper. Stir stock while slowly adding
