====================
ML> Not that it makes any difference, but I wonder if it's
ML> effects or residuum. If my brother were to get significantly
RH> Hard to tell; she was on some pretty heavy meds for a while in her
RH> teens and early 20s. Don't know how much of that affected her either
RH> but she definately needed them. She conned her doctor into taking her
RH> off them at one point, then crashed big time

There's this problem with people who are bright enough
to manipulate their therapists, something that my brother
seems consistently capable of doing. If only they could
have some faith in others and accept the fact that something
outside them could help them. But that's part of the lunacy,
I suppose. And of course that brings up the question of why
they're in therapy at all.

ML> better (I don't hold out too high hopes) in the processing
ML> department, would the memories and habits be too heavy to
ML> ignore, and would his life still continue to suffer because
 ML> of that.
RH> Hard to say but sounds likely that a good bit of it would still remain
RH> in some form or another.

I figure that as well, but this is only a hypothetical
question, as there's not a chance that his current course
of action is going to bring him any relief or improvement.

ML> I admit that a lot was thrown at her, and I admit that
ML> there's major nutso in our family history, but she seemed
ML> really over the top in her looniness, and it was difficult
ML> to tolerate, let alone like, her.
RH> And her problems didn't allow her to realise that medication might
RH> help. She might have been an entirely differet person had she been able
RH> to accept the help she could get. Hard to second guess after the fact
 RH> tho.

My sister and brother-in-law hypothesized, and I concur, that
she might have been a ton better if she'd married someone more
supportive than my father, who himself would have been happier
with someone who didn't require all that emotional energy
(which he didn't know how to dispense except in a negative way).

RH> As a result, she's in constant pain when she
RH> could be doing something about it.

[sigh]

ML> By the way, did I tell you that simple Tylenol has improved
ML> my life this week so much I hardly have words - the crick in
ML> my neck has nearly disappeared, and I feel pretty darn good.
ML> It had never really worked for me before, and I marvel for
ML> the first time at modern 20th century analgesic pharmacology.
RH> No, you hadn't told me--good that something relatively simple is so
RH> effective for you. Sometimes the simpler meds, with a change in the
RH> body chemistry, can work wonders.

It was a huge surprise to me, and it took only about 5 doses
(6 extra-strength Tylenols in all) to tide me over until the
neck- and headache, among the worst in my life, fixed itself;
it's only a vague dull persistence now, rather like what the
post-analgesic situation felt like a week ago.

ML> A point I've made repeatedly: there but for the grace of my
ML> sister go I. Taking part of the heat (though until I left
ML> altogether she got a lot less than I did), bouncing ideas of
ML> sanity off each other, and uniting against a common enemy
ML> (which didn't happen either until I left the household).
RH> But you had her, which was good. Did she get you into trying all kinds
RH> of new foods or did you influence her? As I recall, she enjoyed eating
RH> as much as you did.

The appreciation for good cooking craft came from my mother;
the adventurousness of palate from her father; the wish for
an encyclopedic investigation of a particular subject (say
barbecue) from my father. And then as we got older, it was
a mutual influence between my sister and me.

RH> But your jokes are getting rather silly.
 ML> I can't help it - they come out willy-nilly.
 RH> At least you're not a hill-billy.

Nor a filly. Nor, generally, ruled by my willy.

CREAM OF MUSSEL (BILLI-BI) SOUP
cat: shellfish, starter
serves: 6

1 c chopped onions
1/4 c chopped shallots
2 Tb butter
1 1/2 c dry white wine
4 sprigs parsley, minced
4 lb mussels
2 c milk
2 egg yolks
1 c heavy cream
1/2 ts salt
freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 Tb chopped parsley

In a heavy soup pot, combine onions, shallots, butter, wine,
and parsley. Place mussels on this bed, cover tightly, bring
liquid to boil and steam 5 min or until mussels have opened.
Scoop mussels from pot and set aside. Strain broth through
cheesecloth into a bowl. Press down on vegetables to extract
all the juices. Shuck the mussels, discarding any unopened
ones. Reserve 24 and puree the rest, along with the strained
broth, in blender or food processor. Pour the puree into the
top part of a double boiler and set it over hot water. Add
milk and heat to scalding. In a small bowl, beat egg yolks
with the cream, then, stirring constantly, add a few Tb of
hot mussel mixture. Stir egg yolk mixture into soup and
continue stirring constantly, until the soup has thickened
slightly. Season with salt and pepper. Serve in individual
bowls, adding 3 of the reserved mussels to each portion and
garnish with minced parsley. Note: To serve as a cold soup,
place pan over cold water to cool it quickly. Then
refrigerate. Thin with a little light cream before
serving, if necessary. Garnish as for the hot soup.
