Hi Janis,

>> Well that's no fun but what can you do (grin)

JK> > Exactly! Same as I don't want the 8 am appointment I've got over
JK> there > next Wednesday but I have to deal with it. Other choice would
JK> have meant > waiting another month; this way I get to keep the 6 month
 JK> interval
JK> > between appointments without running into the graduation/Christmas
 JK> time > frame.

JK> Sure, that would have been no fun at all.. instead of preparing for
JK> Christmas dinner or graduation celebrations, you'd be tied up with
JK> doctors.. :( Can't blame you at all, especially when we know there
JK> will be other picnics in coming summers :) Hopefully we'll see you at
 JK> one of those!

We'll try our best to make another one. We've no idea where we'll be
next year at this time. We're pretty sure we'll be out in Las Vegas for
Christmas; Rachel wants to fly us out there as their graduation present
to us since they won't be able to come east for the event.

Looks like I'll spend more of the summer tied up with doctors than I'd
thought. I saw an othopedic doctor this past week about my wrist; he
wants me to have a nerve conduction test (another doctor). That'll help
him decide what course of action to take. My primary care doctor also
wants me to see a specialist for another issue. Between all that and
travel, it's going to be a busy June/July and maybe early August.

JK> > It means we have to leave here about 7-ish--got any straight pins
JK> > to prop my eyes open?

JK> Lol.. sorry no - but I wouldn't advise straight pins - With my aim,
JK> I'd most likely put my eye out or at least poke it Lol. I've poked my
JK> eye with a mascara brush before, and that's no fun (G).

I've never poked my eye with a mascara brush but I can imagine it would
hurt. I'm not an early morning person so I need something to prop my
eyes open before breakfast; since I sew, I figure straight pins should
do the job. A friend of ours who drives for UPS said to figure an hour
and a half (instead of 45) to get to Chapel Hill by 8, considering the
rush hour traffic. Way too early to stop at our favorite Mediterranian
deli for lunch after the appointment, doubt they'd be open for breakfast
before so we'll have to take a pass for this trip.

JK> him & > mom better than store bought veggies. I hope he doesn't plant
JK> so many > beans and other things that she feels she has to put them up
 JK> by herself.

JK> Yeah, that could be rough. Over here, I freeze veggies like
JK> greenbeans rather than put them up.. tomatoes I do both ways depending
JK> on my energy level. It's easier for me to just parboil the beans

Mom freezes the beans (she used to can them) but cans tomatoes. No
matter which way she puts up, with her arthritis it is a major problem.

JK> quickly and stick them in the freezer. Sugar snap peas we eat "right
JK> then" since you can't beat the taste of fresh sugar snap peas :)

We've got a few sugar snaps still, the last of the season basically.
Yesterday at the farmer's market I got some English peas, plus early
cabbage, kohlrabi and broccoli. The zuchinni and yellow squash were
getting big; we like the little ones so I took a pass. Had some in the
fridge from the week before so I sliced them into about 1/4' rounds,
tossed them in olive oil & Steve grilled them for supper. Had some
steamed & buttered English peas, grilled bratwurst and German potato
salad with them.

JK> > I would veto that--get someone in to help her out with it instead.
JK> Maybe > for a share of the put up stuff.

JK> Yes, that would be a good idea as well.

Besides that, they've probably got canned and frozen goods on the
shelves from the last good garden they had so they don't need a lot
more.

>> Hoping to start some tomatoes as soon as we close :) We're supposed
>> to get a date within the next day or so.

JK> > Sounding better and better. A couple of stalks on our hanging tomato
JK> > plant didn't survive the transplant but we've got one healthy stalk.
JK> > Hopefully lots of cherry tomatoes this summer, and well out of deer
JK> > range. If you saw my message to Michael, we got a great deal on red
JK> bell > peppers at Trader Joe's so we put up a couple of pints of
 JK> pickled,
JK> > roasted red bell peppers today. And I thought I wasn't going to do
JK> any > put up this year. Wrong!

JK> You sound like me Lol.. well, it's a good thing to do such when you
JK> have the energy.. sure doesn't hurt :)

Taking advantage of sales and fresh produce in season. Steve went down
to Trader Joe's on Friday and got enough peppers to do another pint &
half of pickled and roasted. Had some on a sandwich (deli meats &
cheese, lettuce and tomato) today and the peppers added just the right
taste of something extra. Tomorrow for supper I'll probably do a
vegetable stir fry over rice as we've got so many fresh veggies in the
fridge.

Catch you later,
