Hi Nancy,

NB> meds in NB>> better shape she will be happier, but that takes time.

RH> Hopefully the picture is improving by now. I know, some meds take
RH> longer to really take effect tho. She's home tho, and that's the
 RH> important thing.

NB> And at the moment, she's back in the hospital. She had a minor fall
NB> at her day program, got sent to ED to be checked out, and now the docs
NB> keep thinking of other things to check... At least she's getting out

Bummer! If not one thing, then another. I'm feeling a bit of it myself
the past couple of weeks and this next week before we take off for a
bit.

NB> of bed regularly, and walking to the bathroom, so she should be able
 NB> to keep
NB> her strength up well enough to come straight home eventually, without

That's good, and better for the moral than having to use the bed pan.

 NB> the rehab interim...

Let's hope so anyway.

NB> others... :) But there is a fair NB>> variety, and the meals are
NB> well-balanced, usually a meat, veggie and NB>> potato (usually
NB> mashed), but sometimes chili (fairly mild) with
NB> NB>> cornbread or ethnic dishes like enchiladas.

RH> Dad would like the meat, mashed potato and vegetable meals but he is
RH> not fond of ethnic foods for the most part. Mom and Dad visited us in
RH> AZ & TX quite a bit but never wanted to go out for Mexican food. OTOH,
RH> there was a German restaurant in AZ they really liked. Some Italian is
RH> OK with them but not much, and not too "exotic" on the seasonings. I

NB> I'd bet that they'd be happy enough with the Meals... and there might
NB> be less variety in their area than here, anyway... we have a fairly

I don't know; I think my brother has done some checking out but Dad
refuses to even consider them. And he's not happy with Mom's cooking any
more either but it's the devil he knows vs the devil he doesn't know. At
any rate, we'll be doing a lot of the cooking the week we're there in
July.

 NB> high
NB> Hispanic population that I think may be being catered to in this
 NB> area's menu...

Very likely so. We got a couple of boxes of the Fantastic Foods brand
"taco filling" (a tvp product) on close out at Lowe's today, cooked one
up for lunch. We each had half of a large tortilla, some "taco filling",
lettuce, tomato, smoked cheddar, a bit of sour cream and salsa--a decent
burrito, if not too fancy. The close out price made it worth the cost to
try; we found it to be worth the cost. The same ingredients could make
it into a taco salad if we served it over chips or just tacos if we had
the shells for them (not too often).

RH> use oregano, parsley, basil, garlic & salt/pepper which is too much for
RH> them. They eat my sauce but I think they prefer their plainer version.
RH> Other than that and the occaisional Chinese, they don't go for the
RH> variety of ethnic foods Steve and I like. We had Mediterranian
RH> yesterday for lunch, Indian today.

NB> You and Steve (and our family) are undoubtedly more adventurous than
NB> the bulk of the American populace... ;)

Good chance, yes. Most of the people here are more adventurous than the
norm too. We knew some military families overseas who kept to the same
way they ate in the states--their loss. We tried all kinds of new to us
foods and have incorporated a lot of them into our "normal" eating. It
did help to be stationed in Germany, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii,
Georgia, Massachussets (6 months) and (Steve spent a year in) Korea. We
were exposed to a wide variety of foods (join a local church; the good
food comes out at pot lucks-G-) that we tried, liked and started cooking
for ourselves.

RH> Last year when we were up Dad talked about giving my sister the
RH> bread machine they have; I wouldn't be surprised to see it still
RH> on their counter when we go up in a couple of months.

NB> Probably depends as much on whether or not your sister was there in
NB> person to be handed it... and whether she was interested in it... ;)

I told my brother that I don't want to see it on the counter when we
come up in July; he will do his best to make sure I don't. My sister has
been up at various times since we were last there; her son just finished
his first year of college at Delhi Tech--25 miles from my parents.

NB> NB>>> ... Inside every older person is a younger person wondering
 NB> what NB>>> happened.
NB> RH>> If that isn't the truth! How did I get to be so old already? (G)
 NB> NB>> Exactly. :)

RH> And seeing more and more specialists. Good thing we've got a
RH> reasonable co pay on our medical insurance.

NB> Always something new breaking down... (G) My specialist co-pay is
 NB> also reasonable, thankfully...

It is a blessing--last week we both had doctor's appointments (primary
care) and this next week I've got a couple of specialty appointments.
Same co-pay as the primary care which is nice.

NB> ... "I'm living and breathing; it beats the alternative"

That's my line!
