I've never had/used the smooth top electric... seen it in action, yes,
but not used it.  I suspect that the disadvantages would outweigh the
advantages for me, but dunno for sure.  I'm used to turning off the
burner before cooking is quite finished, to take advantage of the
residual heat.  But I'd just as soon have the discrete burner coils, I
think.  ;)

I think it is still an option.  There is gas into the house, we still
have a gas hot water heater, and I know that the house used to have gas
lighting before the electric was put in, as some of the pipes never got
pulled.  I don't think that we could just hook it up and go, but I also
don't think that we'd be stuck without the option of putting it in, with
just a bit of doing.  After our fire, when we were redoing the kitchen
then, we moved the sink from the outer wall across the room, and the
electric stove from next to the chimney to across the room to where the
sink had been...  There's still holes in the floor, I think.... (G)
Of course, by then, we may finally be exercising the option to move for

Quite true.  :)

I haven't really sat down to figure out what my dream setup would be. 
Haven't really had the time lately, either... :)
