Hi Michael,

>> At the picnic here on Friday night we went to Mooswood restaurant.
>> It was something that if you look at any literature regarding Ithaca,
>> NY, .. well it will say "everyone should eat at Moosewood at least once
>> in their life" (vbg).

> It'll also say that you should see the Cayuga Gorge.

> Far above Cayuga's waters there's an awful smell.
> No, it's not Cayuga's waters, it's dear old Cornell.

I guess you have to point your nose in another direction? Lol.. well, look,
Binghamton has IBM waste/stink... and it affects everything in Broome County,
like in Windsor.. so after a while you learn not to do free-sniffing (grin)

>> I really didn't want to go to Moosewood to be honest.. I'd heard that
>> the cookbooks (I have three from Moosewood) were better than the actual
>> food in the restuarant.. what a drag that would be if true.. but it
>> turned out extremely well.. the food we ordered was great..

> Good for you. And thank you for scheduling this visit for
> before my arrival. I might be interested in visiting Maxie's
> sometime, though.

I was disappointed in what I ordered at Maxie's really.. we got 12 steamed
clams which were GREAT...but my own order of a Poor boy barbecue chicken
'sammich' was pathetic.. you know those "grilled Chicken breast" parts you can
get from any restaurant? that's what it was.. with some barbecue sauce slapped
on it.. really tasteless and not even easy to chew. I think their forte is
seafood (clams, mussells) but time will tell. Ron and I figure to go there for
the raw clams and steamed clams :)

> Here's an excerpt of my description of the Moosewood meal
> I had back in '05. It was somewhat toned down from what
> was actually going through my head at the time, as the
> person who coerced me into going there was going to read it.
> Interspersed are my '12 reinterpretations.

> 05> Help was amusing and cute and slow.

> Annoying and cute and slow.

Hmm.. we didn't have that problem.

> 05> Carol started with "creme Andaluz," a pretty good-
> 05> tasting potato leek soup with tomatoes and herbs
> 05> (rather too creamy for me, though). I had what was

Yes we ordered that as well.. it was listed though as tomato-garlic-cream soup.

> Carol liked it. I didn't at all.

We all loved it.. it was really very good.

> 05> characterized as chilled Jamaican tomato soup, a
> 05> very intensely flavored tomato puree with lots of
> 05> basil and lots of cayenne, also quite good. Main

Not this one.. same name, but different appearance. It was more a hint of
tomato, and a hint of garlic.. and some cream. If I were going to try to make
it here, I'd use elephant garlic so the garlic flavor was not overwhelming, and
maybe 1 or two fresh tomatoes. It really seems different from what they served
you (maybe they read your review?) :)

> The cayenne made it acceptable. Otherwise it was like
> tomato puree with basil out of a can. This was a prime
> example of what I was referring to as "amateur cuisine."

Yes, that's is what it sounds like you got, sadly enough. The soup I got was
fantastic... the dinner I got was really good as well, and like I mentioned, I
tasted a hint of mint in the ricotta. Very nice :) For desert, I ordered their
cheesecake and that was really good as well.

> 05> courses were rather small - Carol's Italian torta
> 05> was an appetizing but modest-sized construction
> 05> of phyllo over a frittata-type filling of mushrooms

> As was this.

Ron's fish entre was not huge, but you have to figure any haddock fillet can
only be so large.. It was big enough to allow Eoin (my daughter's son) to
share it with him though :) They came over to Moosewood just to visit with us,
not to really eat ... I thought for a while that Eoin was going to finish Ron's
dinner though Lol

> 05> and several cheeses; it was served with some yummy
> 05> garlicky pickled green beans.

I don't think that or the other things you mentioned were on the menu the day
we went..

> Yummy by comparison with the context; no better than any
> other respectable pickles, especially southern Ruth's.

Yes, pretty darn good pickles from Ruth. My recipe for Kosher Dills is
different though. My neighbor from the first house we bought in Warwick NY
gave it to me... nothing but lots of garlic.. will have to see if I can dig
that one up.

Take care,
Janis
