===============
Hi Hap,

-> My dad did a lot of professional photography work for years in addition
-> to what he shot for the paper. He did weddings, liquor licenses, all
-> sorts of stuff to suppliment his newspaper salary. Of course he had to
-> spend hours in the dark room too, developing and printing.

 HN> there's lots you can do with photography!

Yes, and every time the fire siren went off, he was out the door, with a
camera. He still keeps a scanner going for the police, fire, rescue
squad calls. Can't hear them unless the volume is cranked up tho.

-> HN> the poverty level by most measurements

-> We were too, but us kids weren't as aware of it.

-> HN> as this was LONG before military pay
-> HN> got anywhere close to civilian equality.

-> We were on food stamps for almost a year before Stve went active. A
-> PFC's pay was a raise for us.

 HN> We probably qualified, but I don't think
 HN> they even had a food stamp program in
 HN> the 50's. Anne and I qualified when I

I'm not sure when it started, probably in the"War on Poverty" of the
60s.

 HN> was in college, but one month of that
 HN> was enough for me...we made do with
 HN> beans and rice. Pay the bills first
 HN> and eat on what's left.

We had nothing left after paying bills and had 2 young girls to feed.
Even with them we ate a lot of beans and rice, home made "whatevers"
soup, etc. I was able to stretch a penny into copper wire. (G)

-> HN> So Mom worked where she could and Pop
-> HN> often took side jobs as well when he
-> HN> was not flying off somewhere. I
-> HN> think my favorite job of his was as
->  HN> a projector operator at a drive in
-> HN> movie (not sure where it was as I
-> HN> was really young). Mom would load us
-> HN> all into the station wagon (we always
-> HN> had a station wagon) with quilts and

-> We had station wagons until some time after my youngest sister left
-> home. Steve's family had a number of them as well.

 HN> Common sense..most room for the
 HN> most "cargo".

Yes, and no such thing as a mini van then. When we were car shopping for
the first time after we got married, my folks advised Steve & me to get
a station wagon. We ended up with the Honda Civic CVCC wagon--you should
have seen the look on their faces when they saw it! I just said "well,
you told us to get a station wagon and we did................".

-> HN> such and we'd go to the movies. Pop

-> Sounds like fun; Steve has talked abotu going to drive ins but I've
-> never been to one (except in the day time when it was a flea market, in
-> Jacksonville, NC).

 HN> Ah you don't know what you're missing!

I do know, from what I've read/heard. Nearest drive in was an hour away,
local theater was maybe a mile. Besides, until my dad's boss sold the
theater, he'd let employees and families get in free. We saw quite a few
movies that way; no popcorn or soda (had to save money) tho. That ended
about the time I finished 6th grade.

-> HN> would start the projector and then
-> HN> come down and see us while it ran.
-> HN> I got to see tons of cartoons that
->  HN> way (grin).

-> Who's your favorite character?

 HN> Probably Popeye the Sailor.
 HN> Wouldn't that be obvious! (grin)

I'm not surprised; I think I've always been partial to the Road Runner.
That southwest thing, you know. (G)

->  HN> When I'm sick it's Campbells, for sure
-> HN> when I'm well I'll make it from scratch
-> HN> and often add fresh basil to it as well.

-> I don't like the HFCS they think it needs. IIRC, one of the recipes I
-> have for making it also calls for fresh basil.

 HN> Don't like the HFCS...but when
 HN> I'm sick I don't wanna stand over
 HN> the stove making from scratch either!

That's where the freezer would come in handy, make the soup while you're
feeling good & freeze a stash. Then all you have to do is pull it out
and nuke it.

-> HN> higher in fat as well! Last night
->  HN> Annie and I shared a very nice
-> HN> double creme brie on soy crackers.
->  HN> Sooo good!

-> Drooling...........................

 HN> It was goooood too!

I figured it would be.

-> HN> allow it it might manage to get
->  HN> in...but it would require extra
->  HN> plumbing as well....

-> Find out how much the extra plumbing would cost to be done at the same
-> time as the rest of the kitchen work. Then you would have it in place
-> for when you decide to put a dishwasher in.

 HN> Not just extra plumbing, but extra
 HN> electrical wiring as well, and
 HN> space to fit it all too.
 HN> Still it's an idea we will discuss
 HN> when the time comes...as Anne keeps
 HN> pointing out; "we aren't getting ANY
 HN> younger."

Do all the pre work while the kitchen is torn up. Anne has a good point
tho; part of the reason our girls got my folks a dishwasher is that Mom
had trouble getting the dishes clean by hand washing them. She'd stopped
using it a few months ago (a quirky reason but Steve resolved the
issues) so when we got there last month, dishes were not super clean. I
had to wash everything before I used it for the first time, starting
with the plates, etc for supper that night. Now the dishwasher is back
in use and all that goes in is much cleaner than before.

Catch you later,
