In my parents' case there was substantial animosity between
them, and the desire to make my father feel bad at least
partially fueled this behavior.

A lot of the books were from the 18th century; as a child
I found them most intriguing typographically and binding-wise
and ended up missing them as much as he did.

I hope that someone dumpster dived and got the benefit.

All the old ones went away long ago, and what's left is
mostly stuff like DK and Fodor's guides, stuff you can't
give away. I think there may be some of the Silent Traveller
series - this was a Chinese guy, a friend of my father's
from school, who wrote his impressions of various European
destinations in English, which was a very good second
language for him. There's this peculiar and somewhat charming
simplicity about Chinese English, even of the highly educated
variety, and I enjoy reading stuff written in this way. These
sort of personal travelogues were illustrated by his own
watercolors and occasional calligraphy. I now recall that the
author's name was Chiang Yee, and I met him when his wanderings
took him to Washington in the 1950s.

Soupe de legumes en feuillete
cat: french, vegetable, soup
servings: 6

2 sheets of puff pastry
2 celery stalks
3 carrots
2 leeks
4 potatoes
1 onion
2 egg yolks
1.5 l chicken broth
50 g butter
s, p

Peel and wash the vegetables; cut them into
thick julienne. Saute briefly in butter.
Add 1/2 glass of water; salt and pepper
generously. Cover and let cook 10 min.

Bring broth to a boil. Dish out into 6
heatproof bowls. Divide the vegetables among
the bowls. Cut 3 rounds out of each sheet of
pastry and cover the bowls with them, sealing
the edges with a litle water. Paint with
egg yolk. Refrigerate.

30 minutes avant de servir, preheat the oven
to 350F (180C). Bake 20 min or until the
pastry is golden.
