Hap had to be early at the ballpark, and we hitched a ride in
town. Anne and I went to brunch at Jimmy's on First, in the
Silver Cloud hotel. Set up sort of like an old-style diner,
it is the hotel breakfast room but is open to the public, which
seems to be fond of it. Booze is available at breakfast, which
is points in my book.

Unfortunately, it was out of all the beers I wanted and deemed
appropriate for early morning consumption; I followed the
waitress to the bar and discovered that there was little on tap
that floated my particular boat. I ended up having a burger and
a Guinness, both pretty good. The burger was half a pound of
fatty tasty rare meat, and I had it come sta, which in this
establishment is with bacon and Cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and
pickle on the side. The fries, which I didn't eat many of, were
copious, properly crisp outside, and potatoey inside.

Anne had eggs Benedict with extra Hollandaise; turns out there
was enough Hollandaise (rich and lemony) without, but we used
a bunch of the extra on our various potatoes (her plate came
with hash browns).

After breakfast we walked around town a bit, then back to the
park, where the center field gate was open (to a concessions
area called The Pen); I had a Harp before the rest of the
stadium opened up and we walked to our area, which was near
where Hap and his friends reign.

Though our seats were behind the plate, we were encouraged to
sit in a section off to the first base side, so as to meet and
chat with one of Hap's favorite season ticket holders, a
charming girl named Kimberly or something.

It was a pretty decent game, though the Rangers ended up
winning 3-2, the Mariners squandering numerous opportunities
including the bases loaded with 1 away in the 8th.

Toward the end of the game I visited Holy Smoke BBQ, where one
of Hap's colleagues had had a bad experience - a sandwich that
was mostly fat - perfect for me. I ordered the brisket but
didn't ask for an extra fatty portion, as it was closing time,
and the help appeared eager to get rid of us. What came was
underdone and not fatty, and there wasn't enough of it, to
paraphrase an old joke. The bun was naturally soggy and further
soggified by a dose of slaw, which would have been tolerable if
served on the side. I'd say okay minus.

Elysian Men's Room red ale is a well-hopped floral and citrusy
brown brew that thankfully doesn't smell like men's room - it
is named after a talk show on one of the local stations.

I think it was this evening we went to Katie Down's, home of
the wonderful happy hour bargains on weekdays. At unhappy hour
the food is still decent but the prices are not. I was sort of
hoping for the Ram, but it was pointed out to me that a major
advantage of Katie Down's is that it's adults only, and the
Ram is often full of squalling infants and unruly juveniles.

Annie had a quesadilla, which was sizable and more than she
could eat; Hap's Reuben didn't seem to be that great of a
deal; and I had a pound of clams which sounds like a lot but
actually isn't, as 3/4 of the weight of a clam is in the shell.
The clams were pretty good; during the munching Hap and I had
a friendly disputation regarding the merits of east and west
coast steamers; I of course took the part of the east.

A pitcher of Mac & Jack's African porter - an interesting
phenomenon I've consistently found in this beer is that the
first glass tastes decent, whereas subsequent ones taste
less good, even out of the same pitcher. I have no idea why
that is.
