A while back, I discovered a mouse in the basement so I started putting
out traps again.  Caught three of them, and then no more for a while.
I had baited the traps with peanut butter and a raisin.  I noticed that
the peanut butter was disappearing.  One night I went down into the
basement and discovered why.  There was a inch long cricket chowing down
on the peanut butter.  Of course, it was too light to spring the trap.

On another food topic -- today Gail and I went to the Olney Ale house
for the first time in years.  It just so happens that on Tuesdays they
have half price burgers.  These are quite good, 8 ounce, cooked to order
from rare (red, cold center) to well done (ugh).  We had ours with bacon
and cheese, medium rare.  Came with a crisp pickle, a type that both
Gail and I enjoy.  And with some very crisp and tasty, double fried,
french fries.  I think that you would enjoy the place.  They have quite
a beer selection, about 30 types at prices from $4 to $10 each for pints
or bottles.  BUT wait -- from 3 to 6 pm, they have 9 beers at $3 a pint.
BUT wait -- if you go there on a Thursday, they have a prime rib special
and they have oysters on the half shell.  The oysters are $0.50 each.
You heard right -- not $3, not $1.50 but $0.50.

      Title: Chicken Vegetable Tortilla Soup [Texas]> Rotisserie for B
 Categories: Soup/stew, Dairy
      Yield: 8 Servings
 
      2 tb (To 4) butter
    1/2 c  Vegetable oil; divided
      1 lg Onion; chopped
      1 ea Fresh jalapeno; chopped
      4 ea Garlic cloves; minced
      2 lg Carrots; diced
      6 ea Ribs celery; diced
      1 lb Raw chicken meat
      1 ts Ground cumin
      1 ts Chili powder
      1 ts Salt
      1 ts Lemon pepper
      3 ts Hot red pepper sauce
    1/2 c  Flour
     14 oz Can tomatoes
     42 oz Chicken broth or stock
      8 ea Corn tortillas; in strips
      1 c  Sour cream
      3 ea Avocados; diced
      1 c  Grated Cheddar cheese
 
  This quintessential Tortilla Soup was created by Joe Mannke, owner of
  Rotisserie for Beef & Bird. It was included in a Table-hopping
  feature on the restaurant August 14, 1988. In retesting the recipe,
  butter and oil were reduced by half to the amounts listed here.
  
  DIRECTIONS: Heat butter and 1/4 cup oil in large kettle (preferably
  nonstick) over medium-high heat. Add onion, jalapeno, garlic, carrots,
  celery and chicken. Simmer 5 minutes. Stir in cumin, chili powder,
  salt, lemon pepper, pepper sauce and flour. Add tomatoes and chicken
  broth; stir well and simmer 1 hour.
  
  While soup simmers, heat remaining 1/4 cup oil to 375 degrees in a
  deep skillet. Drop tortilla strips into hot oil and fry until crisp;
  drain on paper towels.
  
  To serve, put a few tortilla strips in the bottom of 6 to 8 soup cups;
  fill cups with soup and top with a spoon each of sour cream, avocado
  and cheese. Makes 6 to 8 servings
