ML>> Yesterday's e-mail said that the docs at the hospital are
ML>> amazed at how good he looks.
 NB>> Promising news. :)

ML> Yep - I'll be returninging the 3rd week of December. If I
ML> hold off until Christmas day, I can get there for the now
ML> bargain price of $211. Probably won't do that, though.

Weighing the benefits of bargain price against the benefits of being
there for the whole holiday, eh...?

 ML>> Serbian Musaka with Potatoes
 ML>> cat: Serb, no eggplant
NB>> So the potatoes are substituting for the eggplant...?

ML> Not really - the Serb version apparently never had it.

Perhaps better stated, the Serb version uses potatoes where we expect
eggplant...

ML> I poked around the Internet a bit and found that the word
ML> itself comes from the Arabic for "chilled," which most
ML> moussakas I've encountered aren't. This investigation led

Only chilled moussakas I've had are leftovers from the fridge before
reheating.. ;)

ML> me to my latest online crushette, Emily Brewster, a
ML> grammarian who has some videos on the Merriam-Webster site.
 ML> boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=604452

I take it (as I can't just "click on it") she shows some intelligence?

ML> Also idly thrashing around the term "chilled" - I discover
ML> that sherbet is mostly used as a term for a sweet cold
ML> drink except in the US, where it means that ice-creamlike
ML> substance without so much cream in it, and Britain, which
ML> uses it to mean "fizzy candy."

The things one learns... I probably knew about the British use, from my
sister and her British kids, but it wasn't at the top of the memory by
any means... ;) I've thought that the US use of the term indicated a
higher than normal amount of fruit pureed into the frozen concoction,
since most sherbets I know about are fruit sherbets...

NB>>> We've found over the years that our cats tend to be only mildly
 NB>>> lactose intolerant...
ML>> Lucky - most critters totally lose the ability to digest
ML>> dairy foods, same as me.

Most of them have been fairly young when they came to live with us...
might have something to do with it, dunno...

NB>> A cap of milk, a bit of cheese, the leavings of an ice cream
NB>> container all seem to be safe enough. But we've seen the results
NB>> of too much milk at once for them... ;0

ML> A cap of milk might not bother even me. Or else, perhaps
ML> it would. I used to be a super-milk-detector, with the
 ML> ability to detect milligrams of lactose in a bite of food;
ML> now the very small quantities might not manifest themselves
ML> until the most embarrassing possible time. Like one minute
ML> before boarding a plane, just enough time to pee, but whoops,
ML> and I'll leave the rest to your imagination.

Sounds like an application or corollary of Murphy's Law... ;)
