You are absolutely right.

An old house with 4 inch walls, tar paper as water barrier, and
single pane windows with detachable storms will have a natural air
exchange every half hour (even more if weather stripping is not well
maintained) and doesn't need a fresh air intake for the
furnace etc.

A more modern home with 6 inch walls, exterior tyvek building wrap
plus interior plastic vapour barrier and sealed units for windows
will have one air exchange per hour and should have a fresh air
intake in the furnace room.

A contemporary, well built, well sealed home may be airtight enough
that the natural air exchange drops below one per 90 minutes, which
leads to poor air quality, humidity buildup and lingering odours.
At that point you need to add an power HRV (Heat Recovery
Ventilation) system, known as an air to air heat exchanger. This
involve additional ductwork throughout the house leading to and from
the exchanger which is essentially a box containing intertwined
intake and exhaust tubes and a fan whereby the outgoing exhaust
pre-warms the incoming fresh air to reduce heating expenses and the
warmed fresh air gets circulated throughout the house.

I hadn't mentioned it the first time but our building code calling
for R28 walls, R60 ceilings, triple windows and Ener-guide 80 specs
also calls for HRVs.

      Title: Tibetan Spring Soup
 Categories: Beef, Pasta, Soups, Tibetan
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      1    chopped onion
      1 tb Mixed chopped garlic and
           -ginger
      1 lb Diced beef
      1 pt Water
      1    Handful chopped mooli root
           -vegetable; (or chopped
           radishes)
      1 c  Plain pastry chopped into
           -tiny pieces
      1    Handful lettuce
           Chopped coriander
 
  Fry the onion, garlic and ginger together for a minute and add the
  beef until it is sealed. Pour in the water and simmer for 5
  minutes. Add the mooli and the small pastry pieces and cook a
  minute longer.
  
  At the end, drop in the lettuce and coriander and serve good and
  hot.
