There is - but so many of today's farmers have let themselves be gulled into
the "bigger is better" sh!+e by bankers looking for an easy payday that chances
of getting them out of Mr. Banker's clutches become vanishingly small. One
notable exception is the owner of Cocklebur Farm whose story I told here some
time ago and have repeated at least once. Briefly, he was in a position to
split his acreage in half and do one half by "modern" methods, and the other
using "traditional" crop rotation, minimal artificial fertiliser and chemical
applications, etc. At the end of three years the profit yield on the bottom
line was statistically equal - the percentage of profit on the "traditional"
half was *MUCH* higher and the debt load very much lower. Last I heard Mr. Leka
was doing his whole acreage using traditional methods and visiting the bank
only to make deposits.

Free range in this case meaning not confined to a tiny cage. I visited a
similar operation nearer to me than the Amish one (Arthur, IL) and the pen
covered four or more acres.

It's still OK with me. I will abandon it for real pastrami from brisket ...
probably not for pastrami made from round.

I met them (Joell and Larry) at the Seattle Crab-fest I attended. Still run
across some of her recipes from the days in Oz.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Larry's Light Zucchini Bread
 Categories: Breads, Squash, Citrus, Nuts
      Yield: 1 loaf

      3 lg Eggs
    3/4 c  Oil
  1 1/2 c  Sugar
      1 ts Lemon zest
    1/2 ts Orange extract
    1/4 ts Vanilla
      2 c  Zucchini; grated
  2 1/2 c  Flour
    3/4 ts Salt
    1/2 ts Cinnamon
    1/2 c  Nuts
      2 ts Baking powder
    1/4 ts Ginger
      1 ts Soda

  Beat eggs, oil, and sugar together. Add flavorings and
  zucchini. Mix dry ingredients in next, stir in nuts. Bake
  in a floured loaf pan at 350øF/175øC for 1 hr.

  Another of Larry's specialties. His favorite one. Original
  inspiration unknown, tweaked with over the years.
