Then I suggest that the seek function was broken or not sensitive enough to
stop on a weak but listenable signal. You were less than 400 miles from both
San Antonio (WOAI-AM 1220) and Ft. Worth (WBAP - AM 820) which have burner
signals. radio-locator.com shows KROD and KTSM from El Paso, as well as
stations in Midland, TX and Carlsbad NM are listenable along that stretch. Not
mentioning the Juarez stations as I doubt you were looking for Mexican music or
Spanish language chatter.

Even current radios seek function often skips past stations I know are there -
and if I tune manually to the frequency I get a nice, listenable signal. I
have, a time or two been in a location (mostly with FM) that the seek would do
as you say - and spin around and around without stopping at a signal strong
enough to register on the seeker. But, twiddling the dial would get me a
perfectly nice signal.

It's not a big deal - but, I have been messing with electrons since I, with the
help of my Grandfather, built my first crystal tuned radio set in a Mother's
Oats box ... talk about weak signals. I've seen enough oddities that your
statement of nothing on the radio may have been true for you at that time and
place - but, it sure did strike me as wrong that you could get nothing --
anywhere in the lower 48 ... including West Texas where the scorpions,
armadillos and gila monsters rule.
 
MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Armadillo & Rice
 Categories: Game, Vegetables, Mushrooms, Rice, Cajun
      Yield: 12 servings

      1    Armadillo; dressed, cleaned
      4 lg Onions
      1    Stalk celery; note: whole
           - stalk, not just one rib
     16 oz (2 cans) sliced mushrooms
      2 c  Rice; uncooked
           Salt & pepper
     10 c  Armadillo broth

  Boil armadillo until tender; reserve broth. Remove meat
  from bones. Cut onions and celery and cook in butter until
  tender. Add mushrooms and meat and simmer for 5 minutes.

  Put in a large baking pan or dutch oven and add 10 cups of
  hot broth; add rice, salt and pepper; stir. 

  Place in 375øF/190øC oven and cook until rice is done.

  Serves 12.
