RH> Pre furnished house--nice. From what you've said about the stove, the
RH> owners had probably bought the stove at least 20 years before you
RH> bought the house from them.

That's about what we figured... :)

RH> Did you have a big yard sale or big dumpster for all the junk
 RH> they left? (G)

Nah... and still have lots of the junk still cluttering, especially in
the basement... But some of the "junk" they left was actually good
stuff, that I'm glad they didn't just throw away to get rid of... we
just had to take the bad with the good... ;)

RH> The fridge may have been the oldest appliance. The house we rented
RH> for a few years in Swansboro had a fridge that was so old there were no
RH> shelves in the door. The freezer had a slot underneath, big enough for
RH> one ice tray and the compartment was maybe 15" by 10" by 10" (give or
RH> take; it's been 33 years since we moved there). We got the OK to

Ours wasn't near THAT old... (G) We have one up at our camp (currently
in storage for the next time we are desperate, but still in working
order) that's likely that old, and another still in use in our basement
that we rescued from our church when they got a newer one that's also
likely the same vintage... The old ones lasted much better than the
newer ones do. The one that died soon after we moved might even have
been younger than the stove and dishwasher... not sure about the washer
& dryer, agewise.

RH> replace it, which we did, with the $50. wonder fridge. We wondered
RH> how old it was, what brand it was and how long it would last, among
RH> other things. We never did find out how old it was, found the brand
RH> name some years later and it stopped running about 3 weeks before we
RH> moved when Steve joined the Army, or about 5 1/2 years. He got some
RH> parts to jury rig it into working and it was still running when we
RH> closed the door for the last time on the place.

Long enough for you not to have to worry about it. ;)

RH> I've got to have a working stove; I cook quite a bit. The oven gets
RH> used fairly often too, and will so more now that the weather is
RH> cooling down. We have the advantage we can either call the property
RH> managment office or the landlord if something goes wrong/needs
 RH> replacing.

That can indeed be an advantage... less hassle (except for getting hold
of the property management or landlord), and definitely less cost...

RH> We've had nice linen closets and not so nice ones. Had a nice big one
RH> in AZ, then a small one in HI. The one in GA was on the smallish side,
RH> considering it was a brand new house.

New construction, it depends on whether the builders see much point in
putting in niceties like linen closets, pantries, and such. They can be
considered old-fashioned, I guess... ;)

NB>> That sounds like me and the fridge (and its freezer) every time we
NB>> come home from grocery shopping... (G) Creative rearranging...
NB>> that's definitely the name of the game... ;)

RH> Yes, and it makes for fun finding things for a bit. I try to keep
RH> certain categories of things on specific shelves but it's not always
RH> possible. We bought an over the door wire rack that helps in the
RH> organisation but I have to be careful not to put anything too heavy on
 RH> it.

Just have to remember to put the slightly out of place things into their
proper places when the space opens up... :)

NB>> Well, our son was studying to be an architect when he first made that
NB>> promise. And reiterated it after he actually was working as one...
NB>> Now that he's switched career paths, dunno if he'll actually follow
NB>> through, though he does still have the expertise both for the planning
NB>> and the construction.. We'll see.

 RH> IOW, don't hold your breath. (G)

Something like that. ;)

RH> Very true. The builders put the fridge in a corner where it's not
RH> easy to swing the door open wide enough to get the crisper crawers (and
RH> similar) in or out easily. The stove, sink and dishwasher are on the
RH> opposite wall, all in a line. It's pretty much an open line from the
RH> fridge to the stove (and a small counter top but a big island makes
RH> you have to go around it to access the sink or dishwasher and larger
RH> counter tops. Of course the island can be used as counter space.

Yeah, I can see some room for improvement there... (G) The way our
kitchen is set up, the only real place for the fridge is such that we
have to put the door on the left-hand hinge setup so that we can access
the drawers... but that's not that bad a thing... ;)
