=====================
Hi Mike,

RH> My doctor is very happy with my progress. She had thought my pancreas
RH> had shut down insulin production completely and would not come back.
RH> It looks like it has come back quite well.

MR> That "is" good news. When mine hit, the Dr. Said, I haven't never seen
MR> anyones pancreas shut down so fast. They thought since it was newly

They think mine was a cross reaction from a relatively new medication
and prednisone. I'm off both of them now; the latter was a short burst
and the former had something subbed in for it.

MR> diagnosed that I would just need to take some pills. Not the case, I
MR> admit, I did go downhill fast and ended up on the needle fairly
MR> quickly. Also as to Your come back.. Remember that if You have been
MR> running high on your blood sugars ( usually the case when newly
MR> diagnosed ) Your body is doing it's best to produce the insulin, but
 MR> it spikes the insulin
MR> output so high, that Your body builds up a resistance and does not use
MR> it's own insulin as well as it should. As You became more under
MR> control Your insulin resistance probably lessened and you could more
MR> readily use what Your body was producing. Insulin resistance is the
 MR> 2nd side of

I hadn't had an A1C done with any blood work so the doctor wasn't aware
there was a problem brewing. She thought she'd checked the box for it
with the blood work I had done but the lab results showed no test done.
Anyway, I was told that insulin was needed to bring things back into
line and the injected was the best way to go to regulate it.

MR> diabetes. I remember one time I was ill for about a week, hardly ate,
MR> still needed insulin, though not eating but a tad less. ( I thought
MR> that was wierd at the time ) When I did start eating, I remember I had
 MR> a
MR> hankering for an orange. I ate an orange and a regular, (not sugar
MR> free) Yogurt. I took my regular dose of insulin, but it seems after
MR> being sick and not seemingly producing much insulin myself, instead of
MR> my BS going up, it plummeted. I spoke to the endocrinologist and he

So far I've stayed healthy. Had things "messed up" a couple of
times--the first for my wrist surgery in September and then flying out
here. The first time, I wasn't allowed to eat from midnight the night
before until about 6:30 the following night. Surprisingly, both times
(and with high carb or later than usual supper meals) my morning
readings have been in the normal for me range. Guess I bounce back fast.

 MR> said, You used
MR> regular insulin and your insulin resistance, because you were not
MR> eating for such a long period, caused your body to be less resistant,
MR> When You ate, it used what Your body produced naturally and the Shot
 MR> which was
MR> now too much as Your insulin resistance was now down and your body
MR> used it much more efficiently. So probably by you keeping Your BS's
 MR> under
MR> control and eating right, Your body is not less insulin reistant and
MR> the receptors use it more readily.

Eating right is a big factor. I was super hyper at first, now I allow
myself some (dark) chocolate and a few other (well spaced, well
accounted for) sweets.

RH> I think even they are not totally sure how best to manage diabetes.
RH> Each person is different; what works well for one may not for another.

MR> That is true, even to the kinds of foods. Like I can eat Rice, but not
MR> Pasta. Others don't notice a difference. I swear, I look at pasta and
MR> my BS goes up. 8)

I think I do better with rice as well. We're still working on the pasta.
We use whole wheat; I had a good amount on hand before the diagnosis but
it is gradually being reduced.

RH> Steve helped by doing a lot of research, then we both changed how we
RH> eat and dropped a lot of carbs from our diets. I've also dropped about
RH> 25 pounds--my belt is on the furthest hole from the tip.

 MR> New Wardrobe soon?

Partly, partly fitting again into some things I'd kept around hoping I'd
fit them again. Snugging other things up like elastic waists.

MR> Endocrinologist admitted to me of all his patients, I was in the top 4
MR> in control of my BS. But man I have to work at it. And If he only knew

MR> Beef Burger with Feta and Tomato

 MR> Net Carbs: 1.3 Fiber: 0.5 Protein: 24.5 Fat: 13.5 Calories: 235
 MR> servings: 4

RH> Looks good but I need to eat more carbs with it. I'm allowed 45-60 per

MR> Well, You know I stay a bit light on the carb side, but this also is
MR> not a whole meal, just part. Add a Roll, and a side salad and maybe
MR> some Fruit for added carbs.

I'd have either the roll or the fruit, not both. Yoou're allowed more
carbs than I am so you could have both.

RH> meal, 15 for a snack (only one) per day. I've got several apps on my
RH> phone that are really helpful in figuring food when eating out--had a
RH> teriyaki bowl at Whole Foods for lunch and was able to look up the
RH> carbs in teriyaki sauce. Seven in La Choy, 6 in Annie (forget the last
RH> name), an all natural one.

MR> You know what I miss Ruth, and You will think I am nuts, but being a
MR> more of a low carber, I miss Good Barb-b-que sauce on my chicken. I
MR> looked at some brands I like and for the amount it is kinda high, I
MR> miss that, I always like grilled chicken with a bit of barbeque. I
MR> have made some stir fry, and add a little soy sauce and then just ever
MR> so lightly drizzle teriyaki, but I have to be very careful. But even
 MR> that little
MR> bit, makes it taste a whole lot better.

Try making your own barbeque sauce with stevia or whatever sweetener
substitute you use and maybe a drop or 2 of molasses or honey. There are
a lot of recipies around for it so just try various ones until you get
the taste you want.

Catch you later,
Ruth
