My method is to use Thunderbird for all my Email accounts. I have a
number of filters set up. The primary one is an address check. If an
address is not in my personal or collected addresses, it goes directly
to the Junk mail folder. I have others set up also, some of which help
sort incoming Email into appropriate folders. Of course, I do have to
check the Junk folders to add new addresses so they will go to the inbox
in the future. It has been a fairly reliable method for most SPAM which
gets past the Earthlink (and other account) filters. However, it is not
foolproof. It does not stop the Emails which use forged headers which
state the from address is soneone in my address book. Common sense still
dictates reading Emails and not clicking on links without understanding
where they go.

Unfortunately, that is so. I could do this by using Earthlink's web
based tools, including the Earthlink strict online filtering. That would
reply to all Emails with a note that I will need to approve incoming
mail from people before they can send to me. That ended up being a bit
too restrictive so I don't use that one. My filters are a workable
alternative. CTRL-U to view suspect Emails is a helpful tool also. I can
see the full headers, the path the Email travelled, and the actual vs.
the stated origination address. The Domain Dossier tool of
CentralOps.net is useful for determining the origin of a suspicious
piece of Email. It is interesting to see the actual point of origin
sometimes.

A little bit of paranoia CAN be a good thing.
