Our original Golden Corral was one where you went through a cafeteria-style
line and ordered your meat course and your drink(s) -- the meat course would be
delivered by a waitron. They gave each person a plate for a trip to the salad
bar ... which had some hot food items/veggies, etc. included.

Our version was called "Western Sizzler" I used to order their "Trucker's Cut
Sirloin" - a 24 oz slab of sirloin - and a baked potato. There was a salad bar
and a "Fixin's Bar" to dress up your baked potato. They devolved into a
Maverick - the now defunct chain which I have chronicled here previously.

We also had a Ryan's Steak House - which started out on the same pattern as the
original Golden Corral, Maverick, Ponderosa, Bonanza, and/or Sizzler. Then they
became a full blown buffet place and were taken over by Buffets, Inc. which
also runs Old Country, Hometown, and Fire Mountain buffet restaurants. The
local Ryan's was shuttered due to crappy management and spotty food quality.
The location is in the process of becoming "Royal Buffet" - which is alleged to
be a seafood buffet. When they are open I will give a report.  Bv)=
 
MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Buffet Chicken
 Categories: Poultry, Vegetables, Dairy, Mushrooms, Wine
      Yield: 4 servings

      2 lb Chicken breasts or thighs
           Flour
           Oil
           Salt & pepper
           Butter
      1 cl Garlic; minced
      6    Green onions; chopped
    1/2 c  Mushrooms
      2 tb Flour
    1/2 c  Water
    1/2 c  Sherry
    1/2 ts Paprika
    1/2 ts Thyme
      1 ts Parsley; chopped
      7 oz Can sliced black olives
     14 oz Can consomme'
      1 c  Dairy sour cream
 
  Bone and skin chicken. Flour lightly and brown in oil.
  Salt and pepper and place in large casserole. 

  Saute garlic, onions, and mushrooms in butter until tender
  but not brown. Add this to the chicken. Make a paste of
  flour, water, and sherry. Pour over the chicken. Then
  sprinkle on the paprika, thyme, and parsley. Add olives
  and pour over all the can of consomme'.

  Bake at 350øF/175øC until tender, about 40 to 60 min.

  Add the sour cream and heat through.

  This may be made far ahead and even frozen. Just reheat
  and stir in the sour cream until heated (do NOT boil),
  abt. 10 minutes.

  Serve in chafing dish.
