 JK> ..rotten vegies..
 >>> Probably the issue is the lousy growing conditions...
 >> Could be.. and maybe trying to get deliveries..
 > True, delivery could also be part of the picture...

JK> Heh.. really.. there is only one twisty, windy road in to Ithaca, and
JK> in extreme weather I can understand how deliveries might be slow.

Depends on how you are looking at it... I can think of at least three
different routes into Ithaca, one past your house coming from
Binghamton, another coming up from Elmira area (from Rt 17 or whatever
the new I- number is), and the other coming in from the northwest...
having been on all three routes... But, I can't argue the twisty, windy
as all three have aspects of that... (G)

 > It's the sort of thing that tends to snowball, too... if the rep is that

 > to the reputedly better, and then the other place the veggies sit around
 > longer and are more likely to go bad.. That's when the staff has to
 > super diligent at weeding out the going-bad produce...

JK> Yep.. obviously they haven't been at this Wegman's in Ithaca.. :(

Which only adds to the problem rep... :(

 > This time of year, in state is more local than where Wegmans gets theirs
 > primarily... come growing season, Wegmans will be getting most if not
 > all the "normal" veggies locally again...

JK> I remember the Wegmans in Binghamton surely having large amounts of
JK> "local farm" produce in the spring and summer, for sure. I'm curious
JK> to see how much this Wegman's in Ithaca will have.

You'll have to remember to check it out come growing season... ;)

 > can make a lot of sense to buy that way... If the options force you to
 > get stuff you wouldn't normally use, or you have to get more than you
 > can deal with, it's not so much of a bargain...

JK> That order was great.. we use wholeshare.com.. quality meats, no
JK> antibiotics, etc.. and you could order how much you wanted.
JK> There are two ways of doing it with this 'co-op'.. you can order your
JK> own large order or you can start an order and have other co-op members
JK> in your group split it with you. Recently, my daughter and I split an
JK> order of olive oil (2 3-liter cans each), plus I ordered 5 frozen whole
JK> free-range chickens (no split started). That beef order was great, and
JK> we've just finished that pretty much (maybe there is another steak or
JK> so left in the freezer)... It was initially 4 T-Bone Steaks, 3
JK> Porterhouse Steaks, 1 Boneless Chuck Roast, 2 Bottom Round Roast, 5
JK> Short Ribs, & 10 lbs Ground Beef for about $300. I still have one
JK> chicken left.. and it did save a lot of money since normally in
JK> Binghamton I was buying only grass-fed beef, and free-range chicken
JK> from the counter at Wegmans.. that is insanely expensive, and even more
JK> expensive in the Ithaca Wegman's. I guess I'll make another order like
JK> that in a month or two.. something like that.

It's good that it's that flexible. :) It might still be more than I'd
be able to use within a reasonable amount of time... but then I'm only
feeding two normally...

 > We've not been quite so lucky, but at least so far it's been manageable.
 > Just enough snow atop the ice to give some traction... ;)

JK> That's good.. but yes, ice can be nasty.. your area does seem to get
JK> more of it than we do..

Mostly it's because of thaw and freeze... if the thaw hasn't all dried
up fast enough, we get ice... And a few degrees can make the difference
between slush and ice... of the two, slush is worse to drive on, but ice
is worse (sorta) to walk on...

 >> but I am so anxious for Spring about now, I've been thinking about
 >> where to put my garden hehe..
 > Patience, patience... ;) But this is about the right time for thinking
 > and planning... and won't be too long before the cold-tolerant stuff
 > like peas could go in... ;)

JK> Yes, peas go in after St. Patricks day, so that is coming up thank
 JK> goodness :)

Less than a month now... :)

 > Do you have a miniature greenhouse set up in the backyard yet...? (G)

JK> nah, we've been too busy with getting the dishwasher in (still have
JK> some more parts to get for that), etc. We'll get there eventually
 JK> though.

Maybe that'll be for next spring, eh..? Or maybe even in time for
extending the fall growing...?
