Ärende: Christmas goodies
=========================
Hi Ruth,

-> RH> I do most of that too, if only so I can find things later.

-> It does make the job easier. Then too, I've got to keep reorganising the
-> pantry. We got a box (3 1lb bags) of Hartley's potato chips up in PA
-> this past week end, as well as some rosemary/garlic/onion ones. The

 RH> That's a few. I think I've gone through one smaller bag in the last
 RH> six months.

Steve will go thru most of them but at least one bag of Hartley's will
be used the next time we do the meal for Life Group.

-> goody bag I got at the Penn State Pink Zone game yesterday had a full
-> sized bag of Rold Gold pretzels in it, plus Steve got a couple of snack
-> size bags. Have to fit them into the pantry as well.

 RH> That depends on how bad Steve gets the munchies; it doesn't sound like
 RH> something you should be disposing of in quantity.

I don't consume in quantity, didn't, even before I found out about the
diabetes. Main difference now is that I get out the kitchen scale and
weigh out a serving instead of just grabbing a bowlful as a serving.

-> RH> I'll bet that was a real mess. North Carolina doesn't have the
 RH> snow removal equipment for the heavy stuff.

-> Not in the eastern part of the state, the mountains get a good bit each
-> year so they have the heavy equipment.

 RH> I'd half forgotten that.  I know West Virginia gets bombed sometimes;
 RH> Sandy dumped a pile on them this year.

You've not lived here; this is our 2nd time living in the state. 33
years ago this past week end a storm that was supposed to turn north
dropped 18" on the coast of NC. I was expecting Deborah at the time but
had a few months to go yet; one of my friends had her baby that Friday
and was snowed in at the hospital for the week end.

-> RH> I remember that. Ice is a bigger problem further south. We get
 RH> some here, but it's rarer.

 RH> ->
-> We've had several ice/snow/rain storms since we've been in WF. Hopefully
-> the weather will be good Saturday--a young couple from church are
-> getting married and we're helping with the reception.

 RH> Rain would be OK, but ice ... ice can make for problems.

It was clear, but cold. The wedding was in the campus chapel, reception
at the student center. I was at the student center before the ceremony
(last minute set up jobs), then after. Bride's mom had had emergency
surgery the week before and wasn't able to attend so the ceremony was
Skyped to her.

-> And I did my work at a later age, writing all my papers and some exams
-> on the computer.

 RH> Me too, but a longer time ago. I was working off a DOS box for most
 RH> of it.

When I got my BA, computers took up a big room and I did my papers on a
manual typewriter.

->  RH> though.

-> His is on the nasty side. Probably could be worse but it does give him a
-> lot of pain.

 RH> Heating pads, long soaks in the tub in all but scalding hot water, and
 RH> stretching exercises?

-> -> show that much. Scheduled for a couple of shots and talking physical
-> -> therapy for when we get back. Trying to get in with the VA on it (6
-> -> month wait time) but meanwhile working with a civilian doctor.

-> RH> And sitting on a heating pad or heat pack, I hope. Made him one of
 RH> the
-> RH> rice bags yet? All you need for that is some sturdy leftover
 RH> fabric
-> RH> and some long-grain rice of whatever type is handy. Feed corn

-> Don't know if he's used the heating pad yet. I might make a rice bag but
-> will do it in muslin, with a removeable terrycloth cover. Did that with

Now that we're home, I'll probably make a rice bag or 2.

 RH> I use canvas, denim, upholstery fabric, etc for the rice bag. The
 RH> covers can be flannel, cotton, and often old cashmere sweaters from a
 RH> thrift
 RH> store.
 RH> I throw those in hot water to shrink 'em up some. I usually make a bag
 RH> out of the sweater and another fabric, so that it's reversible. Most
 RH> people use
 RH> the cashmere anyway. The good thing about the rice bags is that you
 RH> can throw one in bed and sleep on it. You can't do that with an
 RH> electric pad.

True, Steve used the heating pad yesterday & said it felt good. Had a
therapy session this morning and I think it helped some.

-> one for my MIL a couple of years ago--it's so much nicer since the outer
-> cover can be tossed into the washer & dryer.

 RH> There is that. I've been known to quilt together some scrap
 RH> (whatever) and use it. People love those cashmere ones, but flannel
 RH> runs a close second and it goes in the wash. The terry would work
 RH> too.

We've got some older towels that could be used for a good sized cover.
Just have to get several pounds of rice.

Catch you later,
