Off brand, or stored funny or cooked funny. The less one says
about Howard Johnson the better, except that his/its/their
products were reliably uniform. And the Tendersweet fried
clams - that's a trademark for the product that popularized
the genre - were very standard. I've had clam strips of some
other origin on some subsequent occasions, and they were
decidedly inferior.

I can't stand Zippy's - the rice is neither good western style
nor good Asian, and the uber-famed chili is bland and beany.
Burgers mediocre, and I never bothered to go back. I have high
respect for Sam Choy, and as you no doubt recall, we shared a
good if somewhat costly meal there, and I've been there at other
times as well - the only decent loco moco that I've had that I
did not make myself.

Creamy Peanut Dressing
cat: Hawaiian, Thai, celebrity, salad dressing
yield: 1 1/2 c (12 servings)

1/2 c warm water
1/2 c creamy peanut butter
1 1/2 Tb rice vinegar
2 Tb soy sauce
1/4 c granulated sugar
1/2 ts salt
1 clove fresh garlic, crushed
1/4 c salad oil
1 1/2 ts hot Asian chili paste (sambal oelek)
2 Tb minced fresh cilantro

Mix water and peanut butter in a small bowl until
smooth. Add the remaining dressing ingredients and
mix well. Let stand at room temperature at least
30 min. Salad match: Good for Asian slaw tossed with
a combination of shredded Napa and red cabbages, fresh
bean sprouts, chopped green onions, and chopped carrot.
