But how hot do the 2 working ones get?  Could I saute an onion
reasonably well or make a quick (thin) omelette?  Conversly, could I
make a pot of sauce and cook it at a very low temperature all day?  What
about the in between setting jobs?

I've no idea why she never did that.  She did keep a cup of water in her
first microwave oven (in case it got turned on by accident) from the
time she got it in the early 80s.  Now that it's harder to start one
accidentally, she still keeps a cup of water in it.

There's very little free counter space in that kitchen. Most of what
counter space there is, is taken up with stuff.  We're going to try to
go up next month and hopefully I can re-arrainge things so she will have
more room.

As long as you were boiling water in the microwave for a cup of tea, you
weren't fully dormant.  Sometimes that's as much as I feel like cooking
when I'm sick.
